One more that will set you back. It’s common for top shotgun shooters to spend 10,000 dollars for a fairly plain wood custom stock.

Fly to his shop. Spend the day fitting including observing you shoot with your factory stocked gun. Pattern stock rough turned. Fly back to have the pattern fitted. Use it a lot, 3rd fitting final tweak again in person. Then the finished stock is built & installed.

Friend of mine is going through the process now. Cut a few  corners meeting the stockman at events. Shotguns are not single shots most competitive shooters have two at most and fit is much more critical. Single Shot rifle self fit or with experienced friends works. Process to get exactly what you want the same

Club offhand match yesterday lot of the COVID limited capacity 24 shooters talked about loads. Top three finishers all using CPA rifles talked about stock fit

It’s important

Thanks guys.  I can do a fairly good finish myself but checkering is something not found in my wheelhouse.  I had thought about asking CPA if they would modify one of their patterns for me.   Gail already told me they could fit any of their stocks to the 044 1/2.  I want to send them my action for color case hardening and it might be convenient to get the stock issue worked out before hand so they could fit an unfinished butt to my action.  The barrel and forearm can come later.  Thanks again, I appreciate all the help!

If CPA has the action fitting a stock set is a easy job. Delivered as off the machine it’s still very shootable and you can rasp it down to suit little at a time . Get close sand it out working from aggressive grit to fine, rub some oil on then wax.

Probably half the CPA rifles out there never get any more. I shot my first one long time that way.

I think that I would like that forearm. Looks like it would fill your hand

The forend should be duplicated out of the same walnut blank. If not your chances of it matching the butt stock by doing it at a later date in time is actually very slim to none.

Yeah, to me the forearm looks more functional than most Stevens forearms.  I like the 044 1/2-44 1/2 actions but I think the the overall aesthetics of the rifles could benefit a bit by dressing up the stocks, especially where the wood meets the metal.  And especially if the "dressing up" also improved the overall ergonomics.
