Remember that the Varner was a to-scale interpretation of a Stevens "Favorite".  The one pictured is the deluxe version.  As best I know, the company went bust rather quickly and not many Varners were made.  In fact, that's the first deluxe model I've seen.

If you go to GI you will see that there's an outfit selling all the machinery, wood and parts for the guns if anyone is interested in reviving Stevens - and competing with CPA (well kinda competing)

Be careful that the comb is not so high as to able a cleaning rod to pass straight into the barrel.  I had to lower the comb on my restocked 044 1/2 to be able to look down the bore.  Tom

A link to an old add to the Varner single shots. The Professional Hunter appeared to be the top of line.

I'm allowing myself to get off topic here but does anybody know anything about the tang site pictured in the link?

Been for sale there as long as I can remember.  I first looked at it maybe 10 years ago when I had some interest in maybe doing something like that.  About the time I looked at the remnants of the CMA Highwall business also.

They need to drop a zero off the end of the price to get it into the realistic area to sell.  Their cnc code, etc is just another 10 years older now than it was then, and it was outmoded then and the price was too high by 10 times then also.  Less and less value all the time.  Be easier to reverse engineer it from a completed rifle than to convert it, maybe.  Plus, the fixtures are that much older and out of date too.

Interesting.  Acquiring that machinery and parts sounds like the Rabbit Hole to beat all Rabbit Holes!  The "ultimate project gun."  Still, it's a bit fascinating to see the stuff up for sale.

Just to be clear, I have nothing to do with GI postings.   The pictures I put up were from a gun sale on GI and they exemplified a style of stock I'd like to replicate if I could find a maker.  Thanks again for all your input.

Is this the style of stock you are looking for?
This is original wood on my 45-44 1/2:
If so, it should be fairly easy to replicate with the thinner frame on an 044 1/2, by using a stock made for a 44/44 1/2, that will be wider in the wrist.

Yeah, I like the treatment on the forearm and butt where they make contact with the receiver.  Those are nice touches.  Do you have a shot of the full rifle.  I'd luv seeing the full package!  Thanks

I am not the best photographer, and for some reason the photos get a little fuzzy when I resize them. This rifle has a barrel that was an eBay find that was in .25-20 ss that I had rebored to .32-20. The original barrel had a Parker-Hale .22 lr liner in it but was in .32 ideal originally. I removed the liner and used it for another project, and installed a TJ liner for .32-20, but I messed up the chamber. Someday I’ll get that fixed, but I used loctite and that liner is never coming out.

Thanks, that's a very nice rifle you have there.  What you have is getting close to what I want to do with my 044 1/2.  Many thanks again1

CPA has a complete stock duplicating outfit in a separate part of their shop. Very large wood inventory too. Over 25 years they have made 6 or 7 unfinished stocks for my 3 CPA rifles. BPCS rule stock, then bench rest, next offhand Pope style then offhand not Pope. Long range and Sporter.

Point is they can adjust the pattern stock and have the machine make about anything.  The machine duplicated stock needs to be finished. Have done a couple my self, had CPA send two out for final shape finish & checker and sent two to stock makers myself. Third rifle sold unfinished to a friend  he completed.

Doubt if there is anybody with better Stevens stocking options & experence  using machine duplicates than CPA . Thing is buyer needs to know what he wants and have a stockman finish the job. My home finish jobs not as nice as professional but still serviceable. Good option order too large cut down to suit then have a pro final finish & checker.

I don't know if you're a woodworker of any kind.  If you are, one option is to make up a pattern stock and have it duplicated in nice wood.  I think CPA will do that for you still, they used to.

Here's a link to a post I made a few years back about how to make and fit a pattern stock to suit.

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

By making a pattern stock, and gluing on pieces of wood or using Bondo to build it up, you can get it how you like it, how it fits you, and get the look you want easily and at low cost, and then have that work duplicated into Walnut with minimal risk and effort.  It is my preferred way to make stocks, and then I have the pattern to make others from if I wish to.

Pattern or if a standard design oversize inletted and installed on your gun as it came off the machine  is the way to get exactly what you want. Not expensive either. Real money is spent on wood final finish & checkering.

I shot my first CPA standard design home finished for 10 years before moving  to fancy wood professionally finished.
