Front sight Stevens model 44
Mar 2nd, 2021 at 10:54pm
Print Post
I'm needing a front sight for my Stevens model 44 in 25-20 Single Shot.  I have scoured the net and checking every site and business but nothing is listed for the model 44.
The front sight is a flip type with 2 posts, with one post broken off.  It is a dovetail type setting inside of a larger dovetail "adapter".
Any help or assistance would be greatly appreciated.

The original front sight to the gun is supposed to fit the wide dovetail in the barrel, it's roughly  7/16.

That's a broken off Beech combination sight.  MVA makes replacements or you can search ebay for originals that come up once in a while.

A guy on the forum here makes them also, ssrifles, The Original Sight Co.
Send him a PM or check out his website.

If a blade front sight would work for you, the #203 Rocky Mountain front sight was the standard front sight on the 44. This sight was used on many Stevens favorite and visible loading pump rifles. These sights are often for sale on EBay. I have a similar beeches front sight that was period modified or butchered that looks just like yours.

Thank you so much for all the info. I'll be busy looking and comparing features and prices.

Basically Bubba got hold of it many years ago.  Its rough but after installing a new hammer spring it at least will set off a primer which is more than it would do when I first got it.  I used an empty 25-20 Winchester case to try it out.  It went BANG.
I have so much tied up in this thing that it s too late to stop now.  Bought dies, brass, have a bullet mold on the way.  Ordered new screws today.
I'll post a pic later on.

Looking at the options shown below that sight I notice they offer sight fitting as a service.  I think I might get them to do that.  Sounds like a good deal to me.

Before you buy or order a sight, you will need to measure the dovetail slot.

The two sizes that CPA has listed as available are the wrong size if your’s has not been modified, and even more if it has. .469” would probably be correct.

Montana Vintage Arms, makes that sight and either you or CPA can get it. It might be that CPA is just out of stock at the moment.

If the dovetail slot has been modified, MVA will make a base to fit. They will want measurements or the old sight.

Amazes me ... the number of “knowledgeable “ gun owners and vendors that call the front sight, a Beech Combination Sight when it was invented and patented by Edward BEACH around 1867.  Cut the inventor some slack and call the sight by it’s proper name... the Beach Combination Sight

When the patent ran out, Lyman jumped on the sight as the Lyman Combination Sight ...
