Oil finish is fine for a hunting rifle that gets a lot of rough use. I'm always thinking safe queens and fancy target rifle stuff.

I just don't like plastic on my wood.  Polyurethane and urethane are made for roller skate wheels and plastic food bags.  Not on my wood.  If I forget and leave a gun out in the rain or drop it in a lake, it's the metal I worry about, not wood, which as we know, lives in a forest getting rained on. Hyperbole?  Yes.  But true.

An important quality of any wood-finishing material is refractive index.  The refractive index of the finish should approach the refractive index of the cellulose, so as to get that enticing 3-D effect in the grain of the wood.  "Plastic" finishes can be nice and shiny, but still look "flat", as if the grain figure was just painted onto the wood.

If anyone is interested, the original finish for Parker shotguns is still available. It is Zinssner Bulls Eye Amber Shellac.

I like True Oil or Varnish. Heavy dark spar varnish. I use a little japan dryer to speed up drying. And I like my finish smooth glossy and highly polished. Final rub is rotten stone and axle grease.

Stocks with a dull finish look like cheap Chinese furniture.  Why be modest, let it hang right out there and shine!   Smiley

What kind of heavy dark spar varnish are you using?

I used to use Carver Trip. Been using Man O War lately. I don't think it matters what brand.
