I’ve always thought that these rifles were very attractive. Is anyone currently making these? Do any of you have one from the 1970’s? Any information on Mowrey rifles would be appreciated.

There is forum dedicated to the Mowrey rifles just do an internet search. Also don't take this as being rude but this is a sight dedicated to single shot rifles and hopefully your post won't get removed before you have a chance to read my reply.

Thank you for the reply, I have seen other posts on muzzle loaders, so I thought it was okay. Moderators please remove if this is not appropriate.

They have been discussed in the Collecting and Hunting sections and one is actually currently going on.

These rifles were made by Bill Mowery in Jacksonville, Texas in the 60's and 70's.
An attempt at a economical ML rifle, copy of an earlier model.
Probably the worst lock ever put on a rifle, but seems to work most of the time.

Back circa 1970 I bought one of the extra heavy models - big brass schuetzen buttplate and a brass forearm - and found it a good rifle, nicely finished, if a little much to shoot off hand for more than say 10 shots.  If I remember correctly, the design is a copy of a rifle made by Allen & Thurber.  Unfortunately it was one of several guns stolen from my mother's house in the early-1970's.

I agree with Chuckster. I worked on several of these many years ago and the lock work was crap. They seemed to shoot OK though when they worked.

I'm pretty sure Mowrey rifles were made in Olney, Texas

Olney, Texas is correct; at least that's where my early one came from.

I am not looking to buy one, I just wanted to learn a little more about these rifles. With a little more research, the mainspring on these were horseshoe shaped, so perhaps that is the reason there was a problem with the spring, or they were not tempered correctly.

You are correct. Was remembering Jacksboro, TX, not Jacksonville, CRS.

I've had a squirrel rifle of theirs in .36 for about 25 years.  Very accurate, and a pretty light trigger.  If you make the trigger too light, it's not safe, and you have to go back on the adjustment some.

Yes Art, and my understanding is ML rifles have always been OK to discuss here. It's ASSRA, not ASSCRA. Never saw it as a cartridge exclusive single shot forum.
