HAMMER WILL NOT COCK PROPERLY ON CPA 44 1/2

Print Post
i am having a problem with my CPA action. The only way the hammer will cock is if I pull back on the back trigger as I cock the hammer. Then it cocks and the set trigger works as normal. As I watch when I pull back on the rear trigger to cock the hammer I can see the sear drop down (from the back view) and then the hammer will cock.  All was working fine and then just started this problem. Any help would be appreciated. Getting ahold of CPA is more difficult than calling the president.........thanks in advance

By thingy do you mean engage or c-ock? That is interesting, if you spell C-OCK without the - it changes it to thingy? Man that’s some automated politically correctness! Guess I got my answer what you meant.
Have you tried spraying break cleaner and then relubricating?

The thingy on the hammer (called a f-ly) may be burred, battered or stuck so it doesn’t allow the sear thingy to catch the full thingy notch.  Take the hammer out, reinsert hammer and fly on the hammer pin and examine to see if it moves easily up and down in the hammer s-lot.

Wow; automated Internet censure algorithms are getting so efficient that soon I will have nothing to be Offended about.  What’ll I do? Cry

Make sure your scope and wood are removed before you try brake cleaner or any other spray solvent.  It can damage wood finish and penetrate traditional scopes.
I suspect that either your fly or sear is moving slowly because the oil has become sticky.

Does your front tigger have any spring tension against it or does it just swing freely? If so the trigger spring is probably broke. It is abit hard to understand exactly what you are trying to point out. If your front trigger spring is broke you would have to push forward on the back trigger to get the front trigger to set. Let me know if that is what the problem is our not before moving onto the next possiblity.

Ok, so I'm laughing about the "thingy" deal, but curious how I vote on this "poll"?

I guess then, that we can't say "until the hammer has intercourse with the sear"? How about "engagement"? "intercourse" might be OK after "engagement", no?

Not sure but I think the gentleman is looking for help and not uncalled for unrelated remarks. Appears he is looking for several opinions that actually might fix his problem. Unfortunately he should have probably just asked for help and not by using the poll process. Also not unusual for someone not to know exactly what to call a particular part or the proper function of a combination of parts to make an individual system work.

Well, I don't know much about the CPA rifle, but I doubt that you can fix it by spraying 'break' cleaner on your thingy. oneatatime suggested doing this, and if anybody tries it, I'll be surprised.

Mr.card1 does your CPA have the through bolt if so there is a fine line of getting the triggers to work properly based on the tension of the through bolt itself. The way it is designed it can actually put to much tension on the bottom tang and bend it just enough to where the triggers will not work properly.
One other thing to look at is the spring putting tension on the back of the sear block. I have seen it slip off to the side off the block. Mine came with a piano wire spring and it would do this from to time to until I cut a groove for it to rest into and that was my own fix.
I highly doubt it is the fly giving you issues and if turned around and not installed properly it just wouldn't go to the half cocked notch when opening and closing the breech block.
What is also interesting is when I tried to use half c__k instead of cocked it automatically changed the word to thingy ?

Sure sounds like the set trigger spring is lifting the rear trigger to high, preventing the sear from engaging.
Not sure how CPA adjusts this.

Three things come to mind for me.
1. It sounds like you have the stock off since you can see in the rear.  Is there a spring on top the rear arm of the sear?  It is attached to the first screw behind the frame on the lower tang.
2.  If you have messed with the trigger/lower tang screws try loosening the front one just slightly.  If the sear fits well in the tang it can be bound up by a really tight front screw.
3. If you have the stock off remove the trigger assembly and really clean it out and oil as has been said and make sure everything is moving freely as they should.
