Ruger #1 barrel profile

Print Post
Going to replace a barrel on my Ruger No 1.
Currently a standard (slim) profile in 220 Swift.
Probably change over to a 7mm-08, would like to change up to a Varmint profile. Probably buy a rifled blank and profile it myself.
Anyone have a #1 with a factory Varmint profile they could measure up for me ? Or refer me to a site showing those dim's ?
TIA

I looked for info but had no luck. I would like to think that any barrel maker could help you.

If you send your NO1 barrel to any of the better barrel makers, they can copy on a tracer lathe, or many have CNC lathes with programs for the 1B contour, and possibly more.

I have a #1V in .22-.250 with 24 inch barrel and a #1V in .220 Swift with a 26 inch barrel, The .22-.250 barrel is stubbier and thicker.

Which profile are you thinking, or both?

Let me know and I'll try to help.

As I said some barrel makers have programs for No1 barrels of different configurations. It would be best to get dimensions at the hanger, to make sure there is clearence for your rifle. All hangar positions are not the same. If you can contour the barrel yourself, not a problem.

Ruger #1V barrel: .22-.250
Length: 24 inch
  Muzzle diameter: 0.752
  Breech (Barrel at Action): 1.172
  Forearm attach point: 1.008

In general shape, the barrel has slight taper to the forearm attach point, then more taper to the muzzle.

Thanks Bud, appreciate it !
John; I have had that thought. I have profiled a couple of Octagons for Hi Walls. Been experimenting with round tapers, on a scrap barrel blank, been fighting chatter. Getting 2 different tapers to blend nicely is a bit of a challenge too.
Any hints on combating chatter ?
Octagon might be easier.

Cuslog,
Simply for what it's worth:
I rebarrelled a No 1 with at Douglas premium
round barrel, chambered in 40-72,  12 twist.
Diameters of the barrel, to clear the forearm hanger
and also fit in the 1B or Varmint forearm is:
Breech:  1.109"   Muzzle: 1.086",  length 31"
for long range BPTR shooting.

Forgot to mention, when I said my dimension of the barrel "fits" the larger Ruger forearms, That was actually " I had enough wood for "hogging out" the forearm for my bull barrel.

Pretty much the dimensions I'm going with on my 6.5x55 barrel. Should make a dandy hunting rifle.

Re hanger clearance ...

Just saw the damned thing off ...

I've got an extra set of these, but they're currently about 1700 miles away.
