	Once you remove the lever pin, you can carefully remove the breech block assembly, with the link and lever attached together. Use caution as once removed, the breech block plunger and spring can easily fall out, unless it is missing from your action, don’t worry if it falls out, as it it easy to put back in. The extractor will be loose also once you remove the lever pin as that is what retains it. You’ll need to remove the link pin that goes through the lever to get to #23 & 24 (lever plunger and spring) The lever plunger rides on the bottom of the link to hold up the lever when the action is closed. Hopefully the lever plunger isn’t missing, because a new one might be difficult to find.

	Another question or two. Is the lever on the 044 1/2 the same as the 44 1/2 and the 44? In other words, do all three use the same lever?

	Similar but no, the 044 1/2 is narrower than the 44 1/2 and uses a narrower extractor. The 44 is different than the 44 1/2 mostly because of the larger pivot pin size and may not have the machining for the lever plunger and spring, some 44’s do have the plunger and spring. Not sure of the early 6 o’clock extractor 44’s that use a screw rather then the pivot pin, but those probably will not work on a 44 1/2 either. Could a 44 1/2 lever be modified to fit a 044 1/2? Possibly, if you are having CPA doing the work, ask Gail.

	no the lever of a 44 1/2 cant be modified to work on the 044 1/2 been there. what happens is the sides of the lever are very thin. the CPA lever has the extractor cut cast in not machined in like the Stevens did. Stevens most likley took raw forgings or casting and machined them for each action type. Ken

	Maybe these will help, they are from a 44 !/2. The exploded view is the way they were removed. Everything is directional but not complicated. In case you need it the spring in this gun is .750 long, .040 wire size, .185 diameter and 16 turns per inch. Bob

	I made an incorrect statement in my previous post and just corrected it. I said 16 turns but should have said 16 turns per inch on the spring.

	The top of the plunger is directional and it can be placed in back in backwards. The slope on the top can be turned the wrong way as can be seen in Bobw's picture. And something else to take into consideration. I have also streached the spring to add abit more upward pressure to keep the lever from dropping. Doesn't take much but it also makes it harder to put it all back together.

	In regards to the piece of paper it is common for it not to be involved in holding up the lever. The space is typically related to the amount of head space for the case being used and for hunting purposes it is about ten thousandths and a piece of paper about four. The reason is to allow for any dust, dirt or anything else that would keep the action from closing while out in the field hunting.
