Thats the plan right now.   Do a short chamber 40-50 Sharps Straight.  I doubt i would ever need to lengthen it.  I have a fairly substantial herd for my future son's in law to argue over after i tip over while hunting. Im the caretaker of a 3 generation gun collection.  Nothing exotic.  Just working man guns.

Have you looked at the 40-50 Sharps BN case.  I shoot a Model 86 in that round.  I've won several long range gong (out to 500 yards) with that round.  I shoots a 400+ grain lead bullet very well.  Smokeless or black it just doesn't matter.

38-72, Iowa says it has to be a straight case.

Yes, sir, it must be a straight wall.  How they figure a .35 Rem is a straight wall, I'll never know.  But, that's Iowa DNR.

I believe the bill, house file 716, that was passed last year, simply states: any cartridge with a diameter of .357 to .500 fired from a firearm with at least a 4 inch barrel developing at least 500 foot pounds of energy. This makes any bottle neck cartridge or straight wall cartridge legal  for deer that is .357-.500 that develops more than 500 foot pounds.

The Iowa DNR asked for public comment for what cartridges to allow, and wanted to not allow some popular cartridges such as .45-70, .444 marlin, and .500 S&W, and a few others that are currently legal to harvest deer. The link to the public comment no longer exists. I think many Iowans thought the DNR was overstepping it’s bounds, and understandably upset.
What’s going to happen with the regs is anybody’s guess.

I don't see a problem with just short chambering it. The rim counterbore will need to be cut in a lathe but that should not be a problem for an experienced gunsmith. You could cut it 1.78" long and call it a 40/40 Maynard. It should work either way. You can throat it to seat the bullet out some to gain case capacity.

40/50 sharps straight is listed at  1.880 long so cut the chamber full length than cut the brass to 1.800. .080 is not enough to worry about in a case.  I bet DNR is only going to measure the case and not the chamber. ken

What's the case length of the 40-50 SBN?  isn't it 1.7 or thereabouts?  That would be a good one...

After reading house file 716 several times, I believe the minimum and maximum cartridge case length no longer matters, along with the cartridge can be rimmed, and rimless, strait, or bottleneck. The cartridge just needs to produce a minimum of 500 foot pounds of energy when fired from a 4 inch barrel or longer in a pistol, and uses a bullet with a diameter of .357 to .500, and you can use those cartridges in a rifle also. I am certainly no lawyer, or politician so my interpretation of this bill is just by someone that likes single shots.
What the Iowa DNR will do with the 2021-22 regs on this is a crapshoot right now.
