Buchel Meister

This single shot gun stuff is worst than crack. I don't seem to be able to get enough. Well I did it again. This time it is a Buchel Meister German Schuetzen rifle. It was proofed in Feb. 1910. According to the book Alte Scheibenwaffen by Tom Rowe it is a model #7929 with all options except having a take-down barrel.
I did a chamber cast and it is still chambered in 8.15x46mm. The 8.15x46mm is the equivalent of our 32-40. Brass can be made from 30-30 Winchester. I scoped the barrel and for about 4" from the chamber there is some light pitting that I believe was caused by corrosive primers but only a few small pits in the rest of the barrel. The Rifle came with all three sights. The rear sight isn't original to rifle but it is a proper replacement of modern vintage. The middle sight is original and the front sight was missing the pin head so I replaced it with a Lyman 17a. The front sight ramp wasn't modified so the original sight can be reinstalled.
I have made up 100 cases from 30-30 brass and fire-formed them with 7 gr. of 700x powder and the remaining case filled with cream of wheat. I have also made a case for the sights to protect them while transporting the rifle to the range. For  bullets I ordered a mold from Accurate Molds and have several hundred cast in 1:25. The mold is #32-182L and casts a stop-ring bullet of 189 gr. Now I wait for the weather to warm a bit before heading to the range.

P.S. I should mention that the scope rail came from Steve Earle.

Nice rifle AJ! Chris told me you bought one, so I guess we will see it during our first shoot in 3 months. Look forward in hearing how that bullet performs.

I remember seeing pictures of your rifle at an auction site recently.  Your photography is much more honest than the auction house photography.

Thank you for posting.

Ballards may be weaker,

Beautiful rifle! Certainly a very high end model, and very complete sight set!

The bore is .306 and the grooves are .317
6 wide grooves and narrow lands
I didn't measure the twist but most of these have about 1:14

Beautiful rifle A.J.  I'm curious as to how long your cases will be.  Will you trim the cases so that the stop ring bullet will engage the rifling?  Also wondering about how you fit the bullet to the inside neck diameter of a fired case.  Seems pretty tricky to me.

Regards,
Joe

The Buchel Meister has a breech block that cam's forward so I cut the brass so that a stop ring bullet seated in the case will almost chamber with my thumb and the camming action of the block does the last bit of seating the case and bullet. The bullet thus seated will show grooves from the rifling on the first 1/10" and the bullet will easily insert into the case. When seated this way if I extract the case the bullet will remain engaged into the rifling. A light tap with a ramrod from the muzzle will remove the bullet. I don't have a case in front of me now so I can't give an exact length. It think that there is a lot of different chambers dimensions for the 8.15x46 so what works for me might be something that will not work for others. As soon as the weather warms a bit I will get to the range and will report back. I may have to shorten the brass a bit more but time will tell.

Very nice, wish my Meister was that nice. I also make brass from 30-30 and trim until stop ring touches the throat, shoots very well.
