Unlike some of the others the rule has always been to be a bit muzzle heavy for offhand competition but it never worked for myself. For me a very well balanced offhand rifle worked to my own personal advantage when I could still compete in it. Not knowing how many here have actually shot serious Schuetzen benchrest. If you can not have some kind of a comfortable balance to where you are having a bit of a hard time keeping the muzzle up. You will never be able to focus on the wind and the mirage that can an will cause you to drop quite a few uncalled for shots and points being lost.

I like quite a bit of barrel weight myself. And I like my palm rest back quite a ways. Everybody's different. Thinking it may work well on a #16 Maynard. They only weigh about nine pounds if that.

No, never work on a Maynard. Lever goes to close to the forestock.

You may be right about the interference, JL. Maybe that's why you don't see them. I've seen pictures but never one on a rifle.

I never had any trouble with mine. It always cleared the forearm. Maybe it only works on rifles with less extreme schuetzen features as existed on the lower grade rifles.

Looking at the photo, he's not using it as a "palm" rest , but rather as a "butt of the palm" rest!

It does appear that he (Ittle) is using it to press or pull against it to steady the rifle. Rather unorthodox, but if that is what he is doing, it certainly worked for him.

In the picture, Ittel is in the hip rest position. Holding the universal palm rest and action with his left hand.  That's simple enough. What I don't understand is, what is the dark object in front of his left eye?  A blinder of some sort?

Ballards may be weaker,

His ad doesn't mention it being a cork ball? And the one I saw on the 1885 was a walnut ball. I would think if it was cork it would require some sort of metal insert inside the ball to strengthen the area that forces the clamp closed as it's tightened.

The balls being sold on eBay are clearly cork.  How you adapt and mount them is yours to figure out.

The rest I have, the ball is Walnut, could not find a name just a "Pat. Appld For"
I always thought it was for a Stevens, Favorite, but mounted on my No.2 RB it holds well, doesn't fir the Stevens 44 like I thought it would, Doesn't fit on my Low wall in 32-20
the insert looks like it would be reasonably easy to cast

westerner  Hip rest yes, but it doesn't look like he is actually using the same "palm" rest, as it does not appear round. It looks as if he is using it to fill in, and strengthen, his grip on the rifle. It is probably a newspaper photo, so the image quality is poor, hence difficult to identify what you are refering to. It almost looks as if his right thumb is hooked over something, perhaps part of a tang sight, which again is hard to define given the image quality. Maybe Randy could fill in the spaces, or provide a better photo.
