To summarize what I think has been deduced to-date, the Wesson pocket "taxidermist's shotgun" that started this thread is now thought to be one of 50 factory-original such made on special order.  If I've got that right, all I can say is "WOW!"

As for the rear sight, it appears to have been there for a very long time and it has the right period "look"; therefore, for me the question of its originality is not terribly significant.

Dan Woods had likely the most complete collection of Wesson pocket rifles/shotguns in the world at one time. Dan wrote his 3 volume set of books on the subject, and then began selling off many of his guns due to health issues with his wife.
I have a good friend who is likely to have the most complete collection now, and is a good friend of Dan's. Some of his guns came from Dan when Dan was selling off, but he had a very extensive collection before that also. My friend also has a large collection of Stevens versions, and many of his Wesson and Stevens are cased sets, and some are serial number 1 guns!

If you can't have the "world's best" collection of something yourself, what's nearly as fine is having a good friend who does (and doesn't mind cleaning your drool of his floor).

Both of my medium frames have peep sights. I can't recommend these for fast target acquisition for a shot shell.

They do have top notches and complementary posts on top of the front globe sights that would help, though. Wayne

Charlie has two cased Wessons that are serial number 1 in different frame sizes. Plus some others with single digit serial numbers. One with a rifle length barrel that nobody knew existed prior to him purchasing it.

Luckily, Charlie is so far away that he needn't worry about me camping out in his front yard just for a good look at his Wessons.
