I have a #1 chambered for .40-50 SBN and one in .40-70 SBN. (I'd have to check the barrel markings. they do NOT say SBN, I'm certain)

Ballards may be weaker,

I'd bet they don't. Remington never used the "SBN" marking on any of their guns. They did use the "S" after certain caliber markings, and often listed the length often the caliber; such as "40 1 7/8" for the .40-45 cartridge that later became the .40-50.
Some calibers had numerous variations over the years in how Remington marked the barrel. So it can be really confusing since the same marking was used on different chamberings.
