Is my patch doing its job?

I picked up one of my patches from my 40-70 SS that had been fired with smokeless powder.  Most are complete graffiti it seems but this one one that was fairly intact.  I can see where the base was burned by the powder charge.  Is this what it should look like?  The bullet was dry patched and loaded soon after patching.  Dry patching seems to be working better for me than wet.  I am trying black powder Thursday to see how it goes.  Though not as accurate as my gg bullet, the pp bullet shot good enough to hunt with using smokeless.  I have 10 months to come up with a good hunting load and really want to find a very accurate pp combination.  Tom

tom,
FWIW, I suggest you use a snug fitting LDPE wad under the bullet to seal better and reduce scorching of the paper on the bullet. This applies to BP loads as well.
My wads measure about 0.412-0.413"
OH, can I presume you had patched a grooved bullet?
I note circumferential rings on the paper.

Arnie, the bullet was a dual diameter smooth paper patched bullet.  The lines shown actually run parallel to the centerline of the bullet.  I will give the wad a try and see if it helps tighten groups up.  Thanks.  Tom

The LDPE wad IMO will not only create a better seal at the base of the bullet but allow the patch to be 'confetti' on the ground when shot.  If the patch is not completely shredded more work will be needed to the reload

What needs to be done to insure that the wad is confetti?  Many times it is but sometimes it is intact like this one.  I am heading to the range tomorrow and put wads under the smokeless loads.  The black powder loads I had put a fiber wad on the powder followed by a lube cookie with an additional fiber wad on top.  Tom

Went to a neat gong match near Fort Collins CO in 1985/6. Masonville. A Sharps shooter who had all the best stuff and a Shiloh Sharps had his patches shredding so perfectly. All participants were envious. It was fun to watch the perfect confetti strips exit his muzzle.  Unfortunately that shooter never made one hit all day. Zero. Zilch.

That was the only time I ever saw perfect confetti leave a muzzle.
