Stevens 44 etched frame and barrel

An otherwise unremarkable Stevens 44 on Gunbroker.  It has scrollwork etched on the frame, which isn't all that remarkable either, but on the barrel?

I can't convince myself that it's a Stevens factory job.  Maybe someone else has seen something like?

This rifle - decorated for a woman, I'd wager - was likely quite stunning when new.  However, I've never seen a factory-etched rifle with anything like its pattern, let alone on the barrel; plus factory work appears deeper. (I'm presuming the action and barrel were (chemically?) cleaned before being etched rather than sometime after, though the latter could've "faded out" the etching, which is how it looks now.)  In any case, once again we see that there are no limits to what someone can and will do to personalize a gun.

Interesting rifle, I've never seen anything like it. Too bad someone drilled holes in the top flat of the frame. At least it's not ridiculously over priced with a starting bid of $625.

Judging strictly from the heavy patina on the gun and the lack thereof where it is etched, the etching was done quite recently.

A very few Stevens with the 44 action had an embossed pattern that was cleaned up by an engraver. My belief is that, usually, the action was embossed, then nickel plated and then an engraver cleaned up the background and details. The sharp angle shown on some of the examples indicates very early manufacture. This treatment I have not seen on any rifles with a 44 1/2 action.

You're saying that you know of 44 actions that were embossed - not etched - and then "cleaned up" by an engraver after being plated?
