Accuracy for .357 Maxima

I ended up with a .357 Maximum barrel for my Stevens 44 1/2, I am breech seating a 236 grain Accurate bullet and am not having much success with accuracy. It is a 28 inch barrel-15 twist.  I have got a few groups of about an inch at 100 yds. It seems to only get any consistancy at 1150 fps. Tried several powders without much success. 4227 - 13.5 grns is only load that showed any potential.  Any suggestions would be appreciated ........Thanks

Have you tried some lighter bullets say 200 to 210?

I have super good luck using Hodgon Lil'Gun and 180 gr bullets, it seems to be tailor made for the Maxi, but I am using it in crimped rounds. H110 is fairly decent also in them as well as 1680, I have 4 different 357 Maxi guns and am looking to do a rechamber on another 357 Mag for a fifth one. I know at least one of mine has a 1 in 14 twist.

Who chambered the barrel and with what reamer?  SAAMI standard reamer drawing calls for a pilot that is way undersize.  Can cut an offcenter throat, not to mention the body.  And the SAAMI throat is just a forcing cone.  Better reamers exist - mine was ground by Dave Manson, and used to lengthen a .38 Spl 12" Contender barrel to Max.  It shoots well, but not stellar.  I lost interest to the whole thing before I really wrung it out.  As far as I got, Lil'Gun  was the best powder, although for "less than hunting" loads, the old standby Blue Dot worked well too.

Well that sounds pretty good to me! Are you using iron sights, or a scope? Unless you have amazing eyesight, achieving 1 MOA (1" @ 100yds) is about the best you can expect without a scope. Your minimum group size will be limited by your PWF (Personal Wobble Factor + vision limitations), and you will hardly see any further improvement unless you can get a scope on the rifle and bench-rest it.

I shoot rifles made over a period of 350 years, and I always come up against this limit. I sometimes have to be inventive to get a scope onto the rifle, but it's often the only way to discover the limits of the rifle rather than the limits of the shooter.

I had one of the ruger number 1 CHP models in.357 magnum and throated out with a case full of reloader 7  And a 260 grain bullet it was minute of angle often enough to be fun velocity was just barely a 1000 though.

To answer a couple of questions the barrel was chambered by CPA and is 14 twist not 15
