.38-50 load

How about a smokeless load for the .38-50 RH to practice offhand at 100 yds.  1:12 twist Douglas and I have moulds ranging from 320 to 365 grains.
Just need to do a little offhand practice.
Thanks

You didn't mention the action type but assuming it's something robust such as a High Wall or Stevens 44 1/2:
18.0-19.0 grains of IMR 4227 with your 320 grain bullet
If it's a Ballard, cut down the loads by 1.0 gr

There are indeed two Americas. Simply put, it is not the haves and have nots. The two Americans are in reality divided into those who do and those who don't.

I built a 38-50 on a Cpa action this spring and this is what I have so far:
18 gr 4227 = 1300 FPS with 285 gr, 1205 FPS with 365 gr
20 gr 5744 = 1300 FPS with 285 gr, 1230 365gr, 1211 355gr.

I like the 5744 load a little better.

Interesting JR.  Still have not tried 5744 - I loaded up on 4759 as they were discontinuing.   Good to have the velocities along with the weights.   My trusted friend says drop a grain or two for similar velocities of 4759.   I’ve only shot black so far but maybe someday if time don’t run out:-)

Best Regards,
John

Since you have 4759 (smart move!) try 16.5 gr with any bullet.
Great powder!  But as you know it doesn't meter worth a darn.

Randy, I should have listed the action also but it is a Cody Ballard.
Thanks for the load info gentlemen, I now have a starting point.

Loads great through a Belding & Mull measure!

All of my single shots shoot one tiny ragged hole with cast bullets ... it's just the following shots that tend to open up my groups Wink ...

If you happen to have it on hand I would encourage you to try 300MP. On the burn rate chart it is right next to 4759 and being a ball powder it also meters very well. Load I used in my 38-55 with great success was 17.1 grains. It also tends to like magnum primers over the standard large rifle primers. If you don't happen to have it on hand just stick with the others that are being recommend that you do have on hand. Over the years I have found the right primer powder combination within the proper burn rates can provide excellent results if given the time.

Hi-Wall: If you happen to use the excellent 300-MP powder that John recommends, be sure to use a magnum powder that the powder really likes

Don't want to be a wet blanket, but my rifle does not like 300MP, .33-47, Magnum primers. Forty rounds, 14.2 to 14.8 grains.
Could not hit a six inch gong consistently at 200 yards. Usually an easy target from the bench to get the sights on the paper.
Back to 4227 where the rifle shoots consistently most of the time if I do my part.

Still amazes me how each individual rifle can be so different in regards to what it actually likes the best. Back in June I re-barreld two CPA's to 25-35 one for myself and another for a friend. Both barrels have identical profiles, lengths, both are 10 twists, bullets are the same, seating depth the same, same reamer and they are chambered the same and both are Douglas barrels. Mine likes 300MP, Fed.GMMLPMagnum primers and my friends in no way likes the same. His prefers AA4100 /  Ramshot and Federal 210 LR primers instead?
