40/70 What Cheer from 338 lapua
  338 Lapua      40/70 or 40/90 What Cheer
Base .584          .581
Rim thickness
       .055            .071
rim Dia. .584         .662

case lenght          70          90
           2.715     1.760      2.00
what would be the best solder to use to add the rim Brownell's HI Force melts at 475 is there some other solder that would be better.
On the few 44/77 sharps I have made out of 300 win mag the rim is bigger then the Base so I made a stepped rim and loctite them on.  thanks ken

KEN:
I have made a lot of cases, e.g., 11 Mauser, using regular .375 or other magnum cases by turning down the case heads a bit, and soldering on another rim, using regular 63% tin eutectic solder, with good success.   It melts low enough and sticks fine, with no worry about annealing the case heads with the soldering temperature.   I machine the final rim shape after soldering, including the "Mauser recess" at the back.
Maybe a couple times in 20 years have had a rim pull off a sticky case, which is pretty good performance.
Before starting, section one of the donor cases to see how much of a recess you want to turn off before soldering on a rim.  I usually turn off enough to eliminate the extractor groove.

TMI .... but:
a quick google search reveals that the strongest soft solder is 96/4. i.e. 96% Sn and 4%
Ag. Looks like it melts at 430 and with that alloy content is likely to be expensive. However, you don't need much per a cartridge. Apparently also good for stainless.
Tensile is 15,000, about twice that of other soft solders. 430 F is considerably below the annealing temp so that worry should disappear. Smiley

The snap ring is .630 dia at large size.  On .300 win mag cases the rim thickness
ends up at about .085 which may be a little too thick for your use.  The extraction groove could be opened up by .015 to chamber.

I added some rims to 50BMG so they could be used in 13mm Mauer (T-Gewehr) like this:

I like this idea. I've saved it for future reference - thanks.

JTeam, that is some fine looking machine work on those cases. A lot of skill and effort for sure. I use a similar technique but solder the new rim on. Nice work. Thanks, ratseye

While I'll never use this process (yeah famous last words) Was wondering is any of the locktite adhesives could be used when pressing on the rimmed section on the made up case?. That would elimanate any concerns one would have regarding soldering on any rims. Some of the locktite adhesives beyond what we normally use are for all intents and purposes basically permanent. And just a little dad will do you. Even if pressed on apply a little adhesive with an el cheepo artist's brush and press the rim in place. Frank

Chris,
I needed some more cases for my 71/84 Mauser and just trimmed to length some 45-90 Starline cases and turned the rims to match the Mauser. Seemed a lot less expensive than those fancy custom cases and they shot great. Am I doing something wrong?
