I bought mine direct from Mr. Allan about 30 years ago.  If I remember correctly, the body is stainless steel rather than iron.  In any case, it's very well and neatly made and worked well with the .32 Ideal cartridges I bought it for.  In fact, the only problem was the painted finish.  Soon after I got it, it's black paint started peeling off.  I contacted Mr. Allan who stated that they had not cleaned the first ones like mine well enough after welding, hence the deterioration.  "Send it back", he said, "and I'll strip, reclean, and repaint it, no charge."  Now that's the kind of person I like to do business with.

Bill,

Thank you for that information. I was told this one is an investment casting, but don't know if that's correct. I'll find out Wednesday afternoon, and see what other treasures may be with it.

Are the Allen duplex powder measures still available? If yes, from whom?
Thanks

Randy,

This is the only hit I got doing a Google search. I suspect they are no longer available.

If you wish to dismiss me as a nitpicker, that's all right (and won't be the first time).  But whether he's still alive or not, the man's last name is spelled Allan, not Allen.

Also, the Allan Foundry still has an internet presence as a "manufacturer of gun parts and accessories"; but my suspicion is that the company is more likely defunct.

Bill,

I don't think of you as a nitpicker at all. I haven't seen the powder measure to see how the name is spelled. I was only going off of the other misspelled name I found during my unsuccessful searches.

Thanks guys for the feedback on sources for an Allan duplex measure. In addition to google I also tried bing and duckduckgo searches to no avail.
My Ideal No.6 measure works fine, I'd just rather use newer tool rather than antique.

Unfortunately, I don't have the equipment or the smarts to take photos, let alone make them computer-accessible.  But I'm pretty sure I learned of the Allan measure from an ad in our journal sometime in the mid- to late-1980s.  Perhaps our archivist or some member whose journal collection goes back that far can get a picture that way and post it.

Pictures of my Allan Duplex Powder Measure. Looks to have been used very little, if at all.

Looks like it's new, how well does it meter powder?

I haven't had a chance to try it out yet as I just acquired it today. Lots of irons in the fire right now so it may be a while before I can say how accurate it meters both charges, but I will report back with the results.

Never seen an Allan, but I sure can see where he got his idea from! It looks "ideal"!

Thanks for posting the photos of your Allan duplex measure. As Val commented, it sure does look "Ideal". Almost as if Mr. Allan was paying homage to the Ideal No.6.
