Not wanting to step on gnoahhh's post about the .28-30, I'm starting a new thread.
Would any of you who actually shoot the Stevens .28-30 that are willing, I would very much like to know what loads & bullets are working for you. Thank you in advance for any data you are willing to share.

I played with the Lyman 285221 for a long time, but set that aside when I got a Hoch nose-pour 140 grain mould.  I breech-seat that with a plugged case in my Stevens 44.  I use 11.6 grains of SR4759 when I can find it.  If not, a similar load of 4227.  Since it's a 44 action, I use pistol primers.

John - don't have a clue, never measured it. Here's a post though from the ASSRA forum with a 44 1/2 barrel also

Quote:
My 28-30 (a probable 1st year 44-1/2 52) has a 14" twist but a larger than standard groove diameter of 0.293".  I use the Accurate 28-130B bullet cast 5% Sn and 12.5 grains IMR 4227.  It shoots in the .2s at 100 but I have not shot it at 200.

So RSW, there you have loading data for different bullets and powder charges

Anyone have load data for the .28-30 using heavier cast bullets such as 145 grain, using 4227? I have a 44 1/2, 1-14" twist.

I fear your twist will not be fast enough based on my own experience and the length will end up being to long to stabilize in a 14 twist.

The real advantage of the 28-30-120 is that it can stay supersonic out to 200 yards and the wind drift is about the same as a 32-40. But if wanting to change to a heavier bullet to just try and beat the wind that advantage may no longer exist.

I fear you may be correct, but the 145 grain bullets are all I have to try,as I do not have any casting equipment. The 145 grain bullets were the lightest bullets I could find from anyone selling cast bullets online.
