Friend Dennis said that if you have more than one of something, that makes it a collection. I bought an amazing George Schoyen .22 Ballard a few years ago that started this mini collection within my collection.
Top to bottom ...
No.1 - H.M. Pope Ballard .22LR
No.2 - A.W. Peterson .22LR
No.3 - George Schoyen .22LR
No.4 - custom Zischang-style .22LR
No.5 - A.O. Niedner .22 Cal (need to do a chamber cast)
No.6 - Eric Johnson .22 Cal
What other barrel makers would you add? ... Hubalek, C.C. Johnson, Titherington, ...

Maybe a Pfeifer and Buhmiller all though they are probably more 30's to 40's related.

Is that a Peterson scope on the Peterson example?

Yes, that’s a Peterson scope on the A.W. Peterson rifle. The front scope mount has the windage Adjustment and the rear is for elevation.

Well that makes thing a lot clearer. With all of the fine Ballards owned by just a few members of this forum, what does that leave for the rest of us to fight over, 3, maybe 4?
No wonder I never run across any.

Joe,
Real nice collection! I'm glad you didn't bid against me on the Pope I recently purchased, I can at least say I have one with markings of a known individual... Pope, the rest of mine I have to be satisfied making in the shadows of those greats.
At least I know who to go to for ideas to copy mine from
Thanks for sharing the pictures.

I have:
Pope .22WCF
Zettler Bros. .22 Short
Cody Schoyen Schuetzen .22LR
plus several different style factory Marlin Ballard #3 versions. But never pursued Ballard .22's, they just seemed to find me regardless.

I've seen some very nice Titheringtons,
wcf3840
. but your supremely deluxe Ballard takes the cake! One question, though. I initially presumed it was a .22 RF because that's the theme of this thread. Then I noticed the re-decapper on your bench. So?

I believe that Hubalek should be in your future, He could hold his own with the best of them when it came to 22s. They seem to be rather scarce, but they are out there.

Joe,
A compliment and I almost missed it! I don't even begin to put myself in the class most of the above shown/mentioned rifles are in.
The problem is most of the rifles I build have far more hours in them then anyone would be interested in paying
and besides, they are somewhat like your children and the only time you would have ever considered selling them... may have been while they were in the mid to late teens. Generally once they make it past that period, if you raised them right, you love them and they are a treasure.
These guns reach their teen years just before they are completely finished and at that point few folks are really interested...
Greg
I think a Hubalek or Worn would really round out your collection.

Joe I noticed three of your rifles have single triggers. Do you happen to know if they might have been worked on by their individual makers. We hear allot about the quality of their barrels and other work but seldom do we hear about any possible improvements being made to the triggers themselves. We all know that a single trigger has a better lock time and I am just curious about the quality and functionality of the three that you now own.

None of my old schuetzen Ballards have single triggers. All are set triggers. But I do have Ballard "competition" type rifles that are factory single triggers. My #7 Long-Range, and #4 1/2 Mid-Range are both single triggers, as these venues rules required the guns to not be set triggers. And I've got a great number of single trigger Ballard rifles that are lesser models.
I've never owned a Ballard with DST, or single trigger that ever had a bad trigger feel. Even the base hunting models had extremely good triggers.

Outside of Otto A. Bremer of old and Richard Binger of new you just don't hear to much about any trigger work being improved upon on anymore. Or like Bremer having it Patent.

I have a single trigger Ballard that was owned and shot by Paul Landrock. He was on the 1924 Olympic team and his rifle was smithed by Pope. It has the lightest single trigger I've ever experienced. When I first got it, I had some shots that went before I was ready.
