Did marlin make any Ballard rifles in .46 ex long ? If so were they cast or forged? Did  Ball and Williams,  Brown,  Merrimac produce any any forged frames?
Thank you for any answers, Lee Gibbs Pres.ASSRA

I've never seen one myself in .46 RF? Marlin did assemble the first Ballards from Brown Mfg. parts that had the external manual extractor of the Brown before John Marlin invented the automatic extractor system. But those first Ballard rifles referred to as the Model 0 by some were all .44RF Long or .44CF Long.

I've personally avoided pre Marlin Ballard rifles, so not as familiar with those. But haven't heard of any that were forged actions either? But try not to say never, or end up eating crow maybe.

I've owned a couple pre-Marlin Ballard rifles that were in .46 RF. They're fairly common in the later Ballards built after 1865. R. Ball, Ball & Williams, Merrimack, and Brown all built Ballard rifles and carbines in .46 RF. But previous to 1865 none of those makers offered the .46 RF chambering.

There's one for sale here right now in .46 by Life75.

I think you have a pretty rare bird if your rifle will chamber a .46 Extra Long cartridge. I have a R' Ball No. 46 Sporting Rifle I thought was a 46 Extra Long when I looked at the chamber. A .46 Extra Long would not chamber. a .46 Long would.

I was talking to Merv Jones, a long time cartridge dealer, who mentioned he had never come across a gun that would chamber a .46 Extra Long.

Regards
