What powder and charge is a good stating place for a forged ballard action with a 1-9 twist barrel and 122 gr bullet breech seated?

Shooting two CPA Stevens 44 1/2; a Kreiger barrel and a Shilen barrel with 1 in 10" twist for both barrels,

The molds are Mos 119 grain and NOE 120 grain with 1:20 and 1:25 Sn:Pb alloy.

The lube is SPG, but switching to Javelina Schuetzen lubricant.

Tried both Small Pistol Match and Small Rifle Federal primers, definitely Small Rifle Primers are more consistent.

Powders tried were Accurate Arms #9 and 4100. The range of the charges is 8.8 grains to 9.2 grains, 9.0 grains for #9 and 9.2 grains of 4100 gave the best results.

Thanks Bud, that was the info I was looking for. I'll be out looking for some powder today.

No, I do not own a chronograph.

I did run them through QuickLoad for a pressure check and had the resultant velocity shown.

The approximate muzzle velocity was 1600 fps and that is close to the observation on the actual changing from 100 yards to 200 yards, 7 minutes of angle. That seems correct.

The pressure shown was 24,000.
