44 1/2 pope action marking?

I got myself a half of a rifle as a box of lightly rusted parts. No barrel. It's a nicer grade of 44 1/2 but no model number stamped on the receiver face. stock is of the 47-52 type, not the high comb shape but the cheekpiece is cupped and the buttplate tines are very tightly spaced. It has a "pope" style lever and a 104 sight. The receiver has a P marking and it is the only mark.

Is there any way to know without the barrel if this was a Pope gun?

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

I've owned Stevens rifles that were not Stevens-Pope, but had the P stamp on the frame. I don't believe the P had anything to do with Pope rifles.

I have a 44 1/2- 49 with a Pope lever but not Pope barrel. Think at the time you could order any combination desired. Or someone with a screw driver changed it Tuesday?
