Actually, in this case the overly-large photo helps.  And while I'm not Biggi, here's what I can say.

They are German proof marks, as specified in the 1911-1912 revisions to the 1891 Proof Law.  As expected, the barrel was proved in both its rough and finished state.  The Crown-over-B indicates a black powder proof; the Crown-over-G indicates a rifled barrel; and the Crown-over-U is a general inspection stamp.  What looks like B1. G.  is actually BI. G. (damaged stamp?) and indicates a lead bullet proof, with 11 grams (approx. 165 grains) being the bullet weight.  The other marks are beyond me but most likely relate to the powder charge used in the proofing.  The rough-state charge would've been the stronger.

Hope that helps.

The 7.6 m/m over 46 indicates the caliber 8.15 X 46R.  The 7.24 indicates the proof date (July 1924) and the 314 indicates the 314th gun proofed in July 1924.  It is a very good target round quite similar to the U.S. 32-40.

Regards, Joe

"BL.G. 11 grams" translates to lead bullet (Bleigeschoss) of 170 grains.

It appears to have originally started out as a 5.3mm (~22 cal) barrel proofed in 1913, then rebored? to the 8.15x46R in 1924. I can't otherwise explain the 5.3mm and 1913 stamps.

Thanks. Looks like quite the setup on an "Ideal" action.

Here's an ad from a slightly later date and what it may look like from the other side:

My rifle has a Nimrod action---very like the Ideal. The reduced size picture is not very clear to me but I think that this is also a Nimrod---one of the more rare actions according to Tom Rowes book. Mine is an 8.15 x x46R.

A bit of proof mark info if you'd care to look at it ...

I may have passed my "Best Before" date, but I haven't quite reached my "Expiry" date yet ...
