Yesterday I won at Rock Island Auction a Winchester High Wall in 32-40. The hammer fell at $1500 and by the time I pay auction fees and shipping it will be around $1850. Maybe a little high in price but....I already have 3 other rifles in 32-40 but wanted a 1885 to round out my collection ( Remington Hepburn, CPA and a Ballard). I wasn't looking for a safe queen as I am a shooter. I will take about a month before I receive it.

The close-coupled double-sets are a very nice extra! Good job!

I like the scope blocks. Period scopes and blocks greatly adds to it's usefulness as a shooter.
Like you said, you didn't buy it to be a safe queen.

I've been returning to look at the photo of your fine rifle since you posted it. Something was just at the cusp of getting my attention, and it has finally dawned on me that it is the color casehardening.
I know every factory produced unique coloration and patterns due to their process, but the finish on your receiver looks so much better than any of the current work. There's something finer and more random about it.
I know we have people today who do really fine color case hardening. I own and have owned many examples, but there IS something different about the results we see done today. Or is this merely a pre-coffee delusion?
Regardless, incredibly handsome rifle. I'm glad you have this to look forward to!

The auction listed this rifle as having been re-case color hardened. They also listed it as being made in 1900.

Hmm. I guess (as usual) I don't know what I'm talking about!
Still a mighty handsome rifle.

I don't know who or when it was recolored. Maybe Winchester did the job in 1901 or someone else in times of old. When I receive the rifle I will try to post some close-ups of the colors.
