That cartridge is way too much for that action. Stay away from it even though it's a nice-looking rifle.

I believe that to be a modern Low Wall which is a completely different design than the original and has no problem handling high pressure rounds.  I don't believe they eject the fired cartridge and as such I prefer the current Hiwall design that throws the shell out with force.  I have switched over to original 1885 rifles but will be hunting elk next week with a Browning B-78 in 300 H&H.  Up until I switched over to original rifles my all time favorite rifle is a B-78 in 25-06 with an octagon barrel.  It has supplied me with many meals of venison and antelope over the years.  Tom

Hornet and BullseyeTom, Is this the rifle in question?? (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) That is definitely an original thin side low wall action and should not be chambered in that caliber. JMO.  Bob

I did not look up the ad and assumed it was a Japanese Low Wall.  What a beautiful rifle but surely not safe.  Reminds me of the Rolling Block in 30-06 I saw once.  Hornet, I think you need to check out an original Hiwall in 32/40 or a new design Browning in a modern caliber.  Tom

I went and looked at it. It definitely is an original. You can see the Lever end
where the cam that rides on a spring loaded plunger to keep the lever tight.
So that more than likely makes it a Winder Musket Receiver. If so it would be
most likely one of the softest Receivers Winchester Made. If it was more reasonably priced I would be excited at the opportunity to get all that beautiful wood and stuff. FITZ. OLD TUCK. Sad

New or old you can't escape the fact that on a low wall the block is not suported ann the way to the top of the block like on the high wall. I would consider this wildcat on a low wall to be an accident waiting to happen.

Looked at it closely.  Not a Winder, no filled screw holes in right side.  SN indicates it is probably an antique.  Definitely a bad idea.  At what point does an accident become a deliberate?

I would. I'd shoot smokeless in it also. Funny how there's so many of these dangerous low walls out there, complete.

Rifle looks to be a little ratty, Like it's been around a long time.

Over the counter 357 Maximum makes to much pressure for the low wall action.

35-30 is reload only far as I know.

Factory 357 Maximum round might make its way in. Could be a deadly combination.

WRA cataloged the 38 Extra Long CF as one of the standard chamberings in the Winchester Single Shot rifle during the 1886-1887 time period.

As already mentioned in the (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) thread... " The 357 maximum is a ringer for the 38 Ballard extra long. "

Anyone can screw up... but when all is said and done, the person using a tool needs to be smarter than the tool they use.

The empty 357 MAX brass case is a sub-component that can be used with the tool... use it smartly and with forethought.
