38-55 Ballard/Winchester Pet Loads

Hey Everyone,
I'm a Newbie to this group and I have been enjoying reading thru everyone's postings. I am interested in finding out Pet Loading for a 38-55 Winchester. Hoping for help with 255 gr Copper Jacket & Lead loading I also want to try some 310 gr Lead loading. I would like to use either Winchester, IMR or Unique Powders I have several of each to choose from. I'm willing to purchase additional powder if the group has a general consensus. All of my loads will be shot from a 1885 Winchester High Wall that I just acquired. I've been reloading for a long time but any help would be greatly appreciated! I've been struggling to find many recipes for this Caliber.
Thanks everyone.

First thing is to slug your bore, 3855's are all over the place. I'm down to 2 , a .377 and a .379, They wont shoot the same bullets.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Not just slugging the bore to determine proper bullet size, but also check the twist rate so you'll know how long a bullet your barrel will like.

Are you looking for hunting loads, casual range or serious let's put them all in one hole loads?  I hunted several years ago with a Winchester 94 in 38/55 with jacketed bullets but have since gone to a 38/56 Rolling Block with lead bullets and duplex blackpowder loads.  Tom

Another question for you, is it an earlier 1885 - USA made or is it a later made in Japan 1885?  Not that the high wall isn't a stronger action but there are differences. If a vintage rifle, is the barrel vintage also?  Are you hoping for loads that compare to those found in newer era rifles, as Tom asked, what are you chasing?

It is a Japanese made Winchester that I purchases for mostly casual plinking but One Hole groups are always Good! I do hunt Black Tail Deer but that isn't why I purchased it. Can't say that I wouldn't take it hunting someday. I would like to try competition shooting with it and my 45-70 Shiloh Sharps. I guess the real answer is shooting gongs at our private range would be it's primary use. Hopefully at 200 to 400 yards when I get it dialed in!
Thanks Dick Dick  Cool

I have had good luck with Speed 235 grain bullets on deer with my 38/56 powder to 28,000 psi as it is a much weaker action than your modern rifle.  The 200 gr  Sierra is a fun bullet to shoot and is really accurate in my rifle. 3031 and 4198 are my favorite powders for jacketed bullets.  Tom
