32-20 loads

I'm working on a 32-20 #2 Rolling Block. I have new brass and 100grain coated lead bullets. Do I use small rifle or pistol primers? The powder that I have is Hercules Unique and 2400, 4198, Winchester 452AA, 231, and 296. Are there better powders and what do I need to know?

Butch,

I use the small rifle primers for all my 32-20s and have found that 4227 powder works the best for me.  One of my rifles is a #2 Rolling block.   2400 is pretty similiar to 4227, but I have always used 4227.   In my 25-20SS I tried some 2400 just to see, but 4227 worked better.  I do use a little heavier bullet.  I think is is about 115 grain  and has a gas check.  I uuse the same load in all my 32-20s.

Used 4.5 grains of unique with that  hundred grain bullet for a nice mild load. Pistol primers work fine at those pressures .There are other loads at work just as well and maybe a little more velocity but that one will put a smile on your face and be adequately accurate for plinking out to a hundred and surprise you at times with accuracy. My favorite bullet for the 32-20 is the 3118

Thanks for your suggestions. Wow, I need to figure out how the throw 3-5 grains of powder! I always thought 20 grains was a light load for the cartridges I shoot.

Butch
If you can find an old Pacific Slide bar measure, I have a chart for the hole size to powder weight..I use this to drop all small charges, no bridging or sticking rotating drums..I have been using a copy of the 311008, and 4.7grs of SR7625 or 4.5grs of Unique...minute of Ram to 100yds

I have 3 rifles chambered in 32-20, Win Lo-wall, No.2 Remington, H&R Handi Rifle

Or a Lee Pistol Powder Measure
They make a "traditional" one
and also make an automatic one
for progressive or turret presses

I guess the first thing I need to do is see if one of my BR throwers will work. I guess I could trickle it to the pan on my scale and pour it into the funnel into the case.

Hey Butch,

Just use your 2400 or 4227.   Any load in the 32-20 is plenty mild.  Why risk a double charge with Unique.  That is funny powder.   When I load it (38 Special, 45 AR, and 45 ACP), I use a Lyman 55(?) which works very well.  My Unique loads are in the 5-6 grain range though.

I don't know why you call Unique a funny powder? in a 32-20 case a double charge of unique at 4.5 shows up quite obviously. The ballistics are also quite uniform and accuracy quite nice. my angle is why use a more expensive larger  charge of powder when you can use an inexpensive charge like unique?

Have you ever tried Herco under the heavier 115 to 120 grain (not the 100gr and lighter weight) plain based bullets?

With the around 100 grain bullets like the Lee or Hensley and Gibbs #65 I've had good luck with 8 grains of 2400. With my current bullet, 311316, I use 5.2 grains of AA5 or 6 grains of AA9.

Dippers can be made from fired pistol cases (.32 ACP and 9mm are good) or even .22 rimfire cases.  Handle can be no more than tightly twisted wire.

Eight grains of Blue Dot is my plinking load with the 3118 bullet. Same powder I use for .357 Magnum and several warm cast bullet loads in bigger cases like .30-40.  No reason why 5 grains of Unique wouldn't work, though.

With an old rifle condition of bore and chamber can be decisive in finding a good grouping load. All of my 32-20s over decades have had "sewerpipe" bores. All shot best with slower burning powders, including real BP and 777 -- always managed 1-2 inch 3 shot groups at 50-100M with slow "rifle" powders, such as 4227, 4759, 777BP sub. With pistol powders, such as Unique, Green Dot, 7625, groups were too large for hunting or metallic silhouette matches. My present 32-20 rifle likes 4759 or 4227, with best groups with 10-11gr 4227 and either Saeco 322 120gr 0,314" to 0,316" diameters or Hornady 100gr XTP. These loads have performed perfectly for small game, including turkeys and foxes.

The sewer pipe bore of this rifle gives 100-250fps less than indicated by published load data. Presume cause is a "leaky" bore.  NO 100gr lead bullets shoot decently in this rifle.

I called Unique a "funny" powder, because it is "flaky."  Seriously, though, I just don't care to use it much.  It is definately a "unique" powder from its inception.  I am also very partial to full, or nearly full, cases when using any smokless powders.
