40-82 for serious long range BPCR

Have a few questions. 2 of my 40-82 Winchester ref. drawings show the case neck at .625 long, yet my 2 original "old" cartridges measure about .520 long. I am leaning toward chambering my new build in 40-82 but definitely want to seat my long 420 gr Brooks bullets in the case.....that would require a neck of .635 optimal. So the big concern is....would a 40-82 Win. chamber reamer work for my needs......or does this require going to the Crossno silhouette reamer that does have a .600 neck, less bottle neck, and is a custom grind for $170. I can rent a reamer from 4D for $34.00  Would the less expensive chamber profile hurt me in long range (400-800 yds) competition.....would the exposed bullet base be upset too much?
thanks

I used to shoot a Cody built 1885 Highwall in 40-82 Win.
Their version of the Win 40-82 only had a 3/8" long neck section.
At that time I was shooting LR with grease groove bullets, so I used a bullet with reduced front band diameters to be able to stay in the short neck with the base of the bullet.
The down side to their version of the 40-82 was the need for a BP that didn't require much compression.  Swiss Fg filled that need.
Keep on hav'n fun!

KFW,
I presume you are going with a fast twist barrel for that
long range 40 with your 420 gr bullet. As Mike T had said,
good idea to have a GG bullet with reduced front bands
to be able to seat the bullets in a short neck.

OR  use a DDEPP bullet(Dual Diameter Elliptical Paper Patched bullet. There are now several 40 cals to choose from at BACO. One in particular for a 14 twist barrel and can easily be seated in a short neck.

Yes using a 14" twist barrel for sure. I want if possible to have all or most of the grease grooves in the case.....lots of blowing dirt here and at the Quigley. I do play with paper patch and shoot them for some fun, but am not ready to get serious about them for competition. The 40-82 win. case, if it will work well, seems to be the economical way to go......since I am always on a budget....hence the reason I Have to build my own rifles. I am not even Scottish!

Here is a Dual Diameter Elliptical PP bullet for your 14 twist
40-82 W. Designed for GG chambers.  This is now available at BACO.
PP bullets will not pick up that dust and sand....
And they are being proven to be competitive in long range
matches.

I built a Remington rolling block last year in 40-82win.  Purchased a new PTG chamber reamer from Midway.  The neck length on it is .467 and will chamber a .410 bullet. If that's any help.
Used a Green Mountain #3  barrel with 14 1/2  twist. Haven't shot it yet.
You'll end up buying the 45-2.4 brass so why mess with cobbling something together with the 45-70. That s what I did. Size and trim, dune!

Often times one can have a custom reamer ground in order to get exactly what it is he wants. When done you can sell it and if you minus the reamer rental cost, shipping to and from you can easily break even when all is said and done.

If you ever want to come down to one of the monthly matches at Forsyth, I could bring my 40-82 out. We have a Long range match the saturday before the first sunday of every month (weather permitting)
800, 900, 1000 yds

Also  mid range match  (300 yds to 800 yds) the second Sunday of every month.

I have the big guns for the long range work at Forsyth, just lack the better sights for that distance. But.....I am working on fixing that shortfall. I will see you there yet this fall and have a look at your 40-82.
best

We used to designate the September match as a 40 or under match but now it's a memorial match for Buz Coker. I need to pick another month and start that again.
Any gun was welcome. Just gave special recognition to the top 40 Cal shooters.
