Just a side note, My Butchers Steel has over the years become Magnetic which I attribute to the movement of the knife in one direction.  I would suggest a Industrial Strength Demagnetizing Unit where you pass the objects over it.  Check MSC  David

All good butcher steels are magnetic from the factory; why?, I don't know.
I have a "growler" used in days gone by for checking armatures on generators and starters and it's great for de-magnetizing tools, etc.

I find this quite vexing as well, and while the magnetic property can very occasionally be useful, it's one of the reasons I have great disdain for the magnetic bit screwdrivers Brownell's popularized.

I made my living as a gunsmith for years, and used a set of the old Bonanza turnscrews for most tasks. I did keep a large "Magnabit" set to be used when needed, but these were promptly removed from the bench after use.

I can't tell you how many times I found myself on my knees performing the "gunsmith's prayer" looking for a missing pin, spring or screw, only to find later than the magnetic screwdriver had "stolen" the missing item. That's when I got in the habit of putting that devilish tool away immediately after use!

Just Jim,

Many years ago before the proliferation of electronic cameras, I made a (meager) living repairing the pre 1980 vintage cameras.  Flying springs and screws were much smaller.  I had a coil type de-magnetizer with a momentary on switch.  Accidentally put something on the switch and came VERY close to burning my house down.

Yikes! Yes, I had to fix an old Pentax "K" once - wee tiny little screws!
