Cheap and easy front sight idea...

I have "rediscovered" my Maynards of late, now that I'm finally moving to a place where I will be able to shoot and enjoy them. I was tinkering with one the other day, and forgot that I had made a simple hooded front sight for it. The idea is so simple, that I just thought I'd throw it out there for others to add to their "idea files."

Because I used to build custom 1911 pistols, I have a small pile of original rear sights. All I did was to take one of those, and run a half inch ball end mill across the existing notch to make a "saddle." Then cut off a bit of scrap .500' steel tubing, hard solder it into place, then invert the sight and drill and tap for a #4-40 screw. The screw was cut to the approximate center of the hood, and then roughly turned into a "pin head" configuration.

Including cutting a 3/8" dovetail in the barrel and finishing with cold blue, the entire project took perhaps an hour and a half. I know it's not fine work the likes of which I've seen here, but it's a simple and easy idea that might serve someone else.

Cheers...   Jim

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!
