Earl Hines Model 44 in .32-40 (Read 2920 times)

	This popped up on my Gunbroker notifications this morning. A very plain-looking 44 action, very high serial number, rebarreled .32-40 by a Mr. Earl Hines, and so marked. Mr. Hines said to have been a Schuetzen shooter in the '90s, apparently living in Tucson area. Ring any bells ? Just curious.

	Yes, he was at Cody Ballard for most of the time it was operating. He is a fine gunsmith and offhand shot and He won many matches competing with the best at the time.

	Earl has been in Schuetzen, for a long time. I didn't know him but, knew his name from the '80, at Coors and match results in ASSRA matches. I don't know if he's still with us or still doing work but, if you do a searh, on this forum, you'll find lots of info on him. 	Unfortunately, the hammer is not lugged, so in my opinion you'd be buying a barrel and an action that are not the best candidates for being used together. Bill Lawrence

	I'm wondering now why such a gunsmith would have been building a 44 with a .32-40 barrel and no lug. Surely he knew better.

	If the rifle was barreled when Earl was in Tucson, it would have been quite a while before he went to Ballard. Only he might be able to answer your questions, and last I knew he was still doing gun work in Cody. Either Keith Kilby or Steve Garbe at Wyoming Armory could get you in touch with Earl.

	That's gotta be the Ockham's Razor solution. That he was building a "bitza". (Bitza this and bitza that. A tradition among fans of old British motorcycles.) 'Course it might a barrel with his mark that somebody else was putting on that action.
