Wow Bob that is fantastic.  An original Borchardt long range rifle would be right at the very top of my list of originals I'd like to own.

Chris.

Congrats!  A very fine looking Borchard that I'm sure would be a bucket list item for us all.  The background on the rifle certainly puts it over the top!

The town is Saratoga Springs  in Saratoga County Ny. While a noted seasonal area for the affluent from NYC Alfred appears to have been a "townie" from court records he is listed as a village trustee. He is buried in Greenridge Cemetery w/ wife Cordelia. He was getting a pension of $4.00 for an abdominal injury.
From an uk Sargent at Bulls Run:
"Albert Mitchell had his cap knocked off by a piece of rail struck by a cannon ball from a fence near by. The same ball threw a rail which struck my shoulder bruising it slightly. Our boys are some tired, foot-sore and lame, but in time will get over it"

Damn those were some tough soldiers, and I might add a tradition that has been followed to a "T" by all the guys fighting in wars after.

scharfe, Thanks for that information.  Where did you do your research to find it?

Congratulations!

I had eyeballed that rifle in the auction but didn't bid.  I think you got a great deal.  Now I wish I had put in a bid.

The provenance really tops it off.
