H & R Shikari rifle

A friend of mine has just bought  an H & R Shikari rifle in 45/70 so he can join in our black powder rifle group. From what I can find out these rifles probably originate in the 1960,s or earlier and have a cast iron action. My query is, if I load duplex black/nitro loads of say 10% nitro and 90% black, will these be safe assuming the rifle is in good sound working condition? secondly any suggestions re loads and projectile weights. All info as always greatly appreciated.

Besides, your note of the Cast action,
check the twist and bore and groove diameter before you decide what length and dia of bullet you should use

Oddly, it was also made in 44 Mag but any Trapdoor level load should be just fine. Factory 45-70 ammo at that time would have had 300 grain bullets so do check the twist. 10% nitro may be pushing it. 5% will take care of the fouling.

H&R made actions named SB1 for shotguns and SB2 for rifles.  Both were acceptable for smokeless powder loads but again all depended on the rated pressure for the caliber.  If you do the reload as a duplex 10% smokeless (4895) & 90% BP (FFg) that equals a black powder reload for a 45-70 ... you should be in safe territory
Bullets?  All depends on the max distance it will be shot at. Any 405 (Lee 457405-F) - 385, Lyman 457124  - 500 (457125) or 535 (457132) Postell grain bullets will produce good results with Green Mountain barrel on the rifle
