Bastard 32/40

Good morning all.
Now that hunting season is over and the apple-knockers have gone home, its time to get serious about shooting again. I am looking for load suggestions for a somewhat bastard 32/40. It is a Stevens New Model Range rifle in 32/40. Having a 20" twist and a .313" groove, I believe it may be a rechambered 32/20. At any rate, I am looking for starting suggestions for a breech seated 125gr tapered bullet. Had an Accurate mold made to throw a couple versions of a tapered .308" nose band, .314" base band bullet of 125gr. Not interested in black, just smokeless loads in the 1200-1500fps range. All my shooting is done at 100yards.

Accurate 31-125C and 31-125M with factory 32/40 and chamber cast.

12.5 to 14.5 grains of IMR 4227 should put you in the ballpark. Consider 14.5 the maximum load.

There are indeed two Americas. Simply put, it is not the haves and have nots. The two Americans are in reality divided into those who do and those who don't.

I think that we need to determine if it's a 44 or 44 1/2 action.

Randy's top loads would be good for pressures in a 44 1/2. I would suggest 10.0 - 13.0 gr for a 44. If using #9 or 296, take 1/2 gr off of those loads.

Because of the much smaller groove diameter, the velocity's and pressures, will be higher than the standard .321 groove but, the lighter bullet, will offset that and give even higher velocity.

I should have been more specific...it is a No.9 New Model Range Rifle. It could have originally been a 32-35 Stevens, though I have yet to see what rifling pitch that it was offered in by Stevens. According to the ad, it was offered in both the 32-35 and 32-40 Everlasting. I tend to believe it was originally chambered in 32WCF based on the 20" pitch.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

In that model I'd be more inclined to think it was originally a .32 Long CF than a .32-20 or other calibers.

It's a mystery for sure. In looking up the 32 long, Extra Long and 32 Ideal in COTW, it could have been any one. My only solid clues are the fairly late sn# of 25205 and the 20 twist. It is a really nice #9 with a great bore. I want to see what it will do for accuracy off the bench.

As the chamber cast shows, the chamber is a full 1/8" longer than a std 32-40 case.

I suspect that in this TipUp, one would have to back off
the charge even more than if it were a 44

I don't know the strength of a Steven Tip up but, if you plan to shoot it a lot, I'd make a new hinge pin from a grade 5 or grade 8 bolt or, even some 4130 rod.

If your chamber is that long, I think you would only get acceptable accuracy with BSing. Tip up's are a real pain to BS on the bench. I did that once, with a Savage 220, tip up, in 30/30. BSing standing is easier Smiley
