Sisk and Wotkyns-Morse Bullets-Collectors' Value?
Nov 15th, 2018 at 2:36pm
Print Post
Digging through my reloading components the other day, I found a box with a bunch of unopened and/or partially full boxes of Sisk bullets and Wotkyns-Morse bullets.  All are of .22 caliber in various weights.

I have a number of .22 centerfires in which I could use these ranging from .22 Hornet to .219 Zipper Improved.  However, before I shoot them I wanted to make sure they weren't collectible.

Anyone have an answer?  If they are collectible, where would you suggest I post them for sale?

Thanks.

When I see those old boxes of Sisk bullets for sale, they never are priced at "collector" prices. So I'd say they aren't collectible myself. I'd shoot them if I wanted to, and just keep the boxes for fun.

I would bet that there is someone, somewhere, that collects vintage bullets, especially those of the larger companies, Winchester, Remington, etc. I am one of those, but find that unless that someone, somewhere, comes upon them before me, they can usually be purchased for less than those currently manufactured. Generally, if the box is not complete, and or opened, I shoot the bullets just to see how they shoot, and as Marlinguy mentioned, save the boxes.

I also collect bullets, but only if they are old boxes and from a well known maker, or a well documented maker. I have Winchester, UMC, Marlin, and some custom makers of old. Have one old box of Tobe Watkins bullets that has a label that reads, Pope Style cast off original HM Pope molds.
I also happen to have a couple boxes of those same Sisk marked bullets, but they're much newer. Look like 40's or 50's, and .30 caliber. Never shot them, but only because I haven't gotten to need to yet. They're in my ammo locker to load with, and not in my collectible ammo cabinet.

People will collect anything.  Finding the well-heeled Collector is generally more chancy than finding the Item was.

You might check on cartridge collectors’ websites and also the sheets of sale items some of them send out.

Me, I just bang ‘em out to get a flavor of what the ODGs used to do.  Shot up a bunch of Western Tool and Copper Works bullets a while back, and they shot as good as most modern offerings.  To those who will say I wasted a precious, irreplaceable bit of reloading history, the back of my hand.  Where were you and your C-notes when I needed them?

I was going to shoot them, but figured I'd ask first.  They are almost certainly from the late 40s or early 50s, as the rest of the stuff (.219 Zipper Improved brass) has handwritten 1951 dates of reload on the boxes.

I guess shooting them will be fun.  Connect to shooters from my father's era.

Thanks for your help.

Sisk bullets show up on Gunbroker often enough, and at such reasonable prices, that I've collected a couple hundred, intending to shoot them in one or more of my Lovells to see how they compare with modern stuff.  Only the like-new, sealed boxes get a bit spendy.

I'd love to get hands on a few of the Wotkyns-Morse .22 bullets, just for the collection.  W-M were the other bullet that was popular with the Lovell shooters back in the day.  They NEVER come up for sale online.  Ten years + I've been watching, and never a one.

I routinely shoot Sisk .22 bullets I find. For me it is a link to the past when my rifles were built. I do find that their accuracy doesn't really compare to that provided by modern Sierras or Bergers, but who cares?

What I treasure most of all are the Sisk .228 diameter bullets. They are the best shooting bullets in my assortment of Savage .22 High Powers, and are murderous on deer to boot. I wish they showed up more often than they do in internet classifieds. Sigh.

I’ll check to confirm but don’t think any of the Sisks are .228.  If they are, I’ll pm you.

I reposted the original question (is there a collectors' market for Sisk & Wotkyns-Morse bullets in their original boxes?) in the International Ammunition Association Forum.  The answer was "yes".

The other question for that day was about the meaning of the stenciling on GI ammo boxes full of .30-06 in 8-round clips, all made & packed in Ethiopia.  Someone was able to translate.  A site with as much knowledge or more about ammo than will be found here when asking about single shots.
