40-63 Ballard

I bought some of the Nosler 9.3 X 74R brass that Vall had mentioned awhile back and was out fireforming it the other day.  Breech seated at 100 yards with 17.5 gr of IMR 4227, it shot fairly well and blew out the cases nicely, but I noticed that there were a lot of unburned grains left in the barrel.  I later worked up to 19.0 gr and it was better but still pretty dirty in the bore.  Do I need to bump up the charge a bit more?  I haven't had much luck finding load recommendations for 4227.  Thanks for any help.

Regards, Joe

Not bad shooting for that old girl, Joe Smiley

I think it will clean up as you go up with the powder charge and a heaver bullet will help too.

Your 20 twist should be fine with a 380 - 400 gr bullet, although your shoulder may argue.

Thanks Frank.  The bullet I'm using weighs 327 grains.  Any idea at what powder charge I might find the best accuracy?  Or where the upper limits might be?  I don't want to get anywhere close to unsafe.

Joe,
There is not much info on the 40/63 but, I think you'd be safe to at least 22 gr 4227. Vall may have more info on loading data.

I only shot mines once with IS, at a match, in 2008. I used 10.0 gr of Unique, BSed with the 400 gr  Lyman/Snover bullet. Although the bullets didn't tip, my accuracy, wasn't as good as yours.

I think 4759 would also be a good powder, if you have any, in the same load range as 4227.

It seems to be shooting fairly well. I think the load just needs slight tweaking. I would try 20.5 gr IMR4227 Anything up to 21 or so should be OK. The dirty bore usually means too little powder or too little bullet diameter, but as well as it shoots I do not think it could be a problem of bullets being too small. I had one. It shot good with .412 diameter 300 grain bullets (25/1 lead/tin)and 20.5 grains of 4227. B/S 1/16" ahead of case. I never found bullets heavier than 330 grains have any advantage out to 200 yards.

How much powder residue is on the case necks after firing? Gas leakage could be part of your problem.

Thanks for the replies guys.  I annealed the case necks and expanded them so they just scraped the chamber walls - they seemed to seal pretty well so I'm thinking I just need to slowly work up the charge to 20.5 or 21 grains.  Appreciate your help.  Thanks

Joe, are you using any filler in these or just a thin wad in the case mouth? Thanks, ratseye

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Haven't used 4227 for mine yet, but I started out using .38-55 data and gradually worked up from there until I got the tightest groups.
I shoot mine mostly at 200 yds. to 650 yds., so I push them around 1350-1400 fps with my RCBS 330 gr. bullet.

Forgot you said you breach seated the bullets. With the increased case space an increase of the powder charge should tighten up the group as well as clean up the fouling, good luck.

Thanks all, I now have a better idea of where the upper limits might be.

Ratseye - I load at the bench and don't use any kind of filler or wad.  Just dump in the powder and lay them gently in the chamber.
