Process of reloading large caliber rimfire.

Hi all,

I’m new here, soon I plan on remanufacturing a few different large rimfire calibers. For starters I will be making 56-50, 56-56, 44 long , 44 Henry. These will be sold as unprimed cartrage and to be reloaded by the buyer. Now I’m curious on how they factory loaded rimfire cartridges back in the day. I would think that driving a primed rim cartrage full of black powder into a seating and crimping could be dangerous. So this is why I start this thread. Maybe we can find some documation on the subject and educate ourselves.

Ballards may be weaker,

No reason that there would be enough pressure during seating a primed and charged case to set it off. And not sure how one would ever add priming solution and powder after the bullet was seated?
RF primed cases take a sharp strike to set them off, and just pressure wont do it. You could empty the bullet and powder from a RF case and slowly compress it in your vise and not set it off. Plus if there was enough pressure to compress the rim, there's something really wrong!

Thanks for the input, yes this makes sense. I am unfamiliar with reloading rimfire and just want to make sure I’m not creating a bomb. And definitely a good test experiment with the 22rf.

Ammunition Making by George Frost has a lot of detail on the making of .22 rimfire ammunition, which ought to be applicable to production of larger rimfire cartridges.

The book is (last I knew) available through the NRA.

Thanks Bent_ramrod. Although I am very familiar with the process of draw forming and the shaping of metal parts, I was mainly stuck on the reloading aspect. I would think marlin guy is correct and it seemed logical but I will see what I can find on this book and post some examples which could possibly lead to further discussion.
