Silver Bullets

I have a couple of damaged sterling silver pieces and I'm thinking of casting some bullets suitable for 45 Colt as novelty pieces. (and protection from werewolves Wink )

I have a 260 grain mold, which I surmise will throw silver of about 134 grains, very low for that caliber.

Long shot, does anyone have any experience with this?

I'm wondering about whether a few rounds would harm a barrel, and how much heat it might take to melt the silver.
I'm a very inexperienced caster.
Any thoughts? (other than it's a dumb idea)

Aaron

AARON:
Just occurred to me that it might be possible to make silver bullets by the silver/mercury dental amalgam process.

Nothing new under the sun:

Wiki says my 250 grain mold might drop a heavier bullet than I thought at 190 grains.
I have a small furnace that should melt the silver at about 1763 deg. F.
Time to get out the Ove Glove.

Mike.

I think that silver works for both.  So really it's sort of a universal ammo  Grin

Not silver, but pewter works well.  Cast into a COLD mould.   Pewter is 90+ % TIN with antimony or copper added for strength.  (Hint: lead free solder: 95/5)

Doubt silver would harm the bore of a gun. If harder copper jacketed bullets wont harm it, then silver shouldn't.
But I can't afford to melt down my silver to find out. What if I can't retrieve the bullets after the werewolf runs off with one in his butt?

Wait until daylight and then look for the fellow walking around with a limp.    Wink
