Custom Stevens No.35 Pistol w Stevens-Pope barrel

I thought this little pistol might be fun to share.  Its an original Stevens No.35 pistol but the barrel is a section from a .22 Cal Stevens-Pope rifle barrel complete with left-handed twist.

The barrel measures 5-5/8" long and approx 0.910" across the flats.  The bore is mint.  The gun was bought in its current configuration from Bill Sukalle, gunmaker, in Phoenix, AZ.  Whether he was the one to put this barrel on the pistol frame in unknown but I think likely.

This little pistol showed up at auction in June, 2017 but was in smooth gray condition.  It was very recently given a mechanical tune-up with a new hinge-pin, hammer spring and the entire pistol has been rust-blued.

Wow, indeed!  I particularly like the way the barrel has been gracefully adapted to the tip-up action.

By the way, Sukalle was a pretty good barrel  maker too.  If he did fit the barrel he most likely also cut the chamber; if so, that little rascal may well be (to again make very gentle fun of JLouis) a very good shooter indeed!

Pretty darn sexy the way the heavy octagon fits the 35 frame! A lot neater appearance than the typical pencil thin barrels they came with.

Oh....would that be fun a nice fall day. I would just be sitting on the porch slowly burning up a box of low vel shorts.

Thanks for all the compliments!  I have not shot this pistol (yet) but will report back when I do.

Is it shorts only or long and long rifle?  Nice pistol!  We need more of them and matches too!  Grin

Pretty darned nice workmanship Joe! And I love how they retained the rollstamped portion of the barrel too! Wonder where the rest of the barrel got used? Probably several more pistols left in the rest of the barrel!

Thanks for showing it Joe. Great pictures and interesting pistol. I'll follow along and like to read about how it shoots.

I'm making a guess that this was originally a rifle barrel that either had a bulge in it or got damaged in some other way and someone used it on this pistol frame. Anyone aware of Pope ever doing any pistol barrels?

Good point. I can’t imagine anyone ruining a full-length barrel for this little pistol.  Something must halve been wrong with the original barrel.

Yes, Pope did some pistols also. Some time ago I posted photos of a Colt Camp Perry single-shot pistol with a Pope marked and numbered barrel.

Joe saw this Pope 1891 S & W when he visited some time ago.  I think the S & W  is the most common Pope barrelled handgun.  The gold medal is from the 908 Olympics, the same as the one won by J E Gorman with this pistol.

I guess I'll have to try again to get the photo to move from Photobucket.
