Marlin's catalog info listed the .25-20 M as "17 grs. of black powder and a bullet 86 grains in weight". The velocity of this cartridge was listed at 1547 fps.
Smokeless loads were listed as the same velocity, and bullet weight. An interesting note was the lead bullet is listed as 60 parts pure lead, and no mention of the other 40 parts. Guessing it would be tin.
Vall,
The WRA catalogs show the following for both the 25-20 Win 1892 and the 25-20 Marlin repeater cartridge Black powder loadings -
Powder... 17 grains
Bullets... 1 part tin and 60 parts lead
Bullet... 86 grains
The Black powder load is listed with a Lead alloy bullet only.
The equivalent
standard smokeless load is shown available with Lead, Soft Point, or Full Patch bullets.
The Hi-Vel load is shown available with either the Soft Point or Full Patch bullet.
Velocity of the Win 1892 and the Marlin 25-20 Repeater Black powder loadings and the equivalent standard smokeless loadings are listed by WRA at 1300 fps (out of a 24" barrel) up through the 1908 catalog, but in 1910 through 1918 is shown with a velocity of 1376 fps (out of a 24" barrel).
Because this topic regards the
Stevens 44, I am NOT providing the published 25-20 Repeater Hi-Vel load velocities in this thread.
The WRA catalogs show the following for the 25-20 Single Shot cartridge Black powder load -
Powder... 19 grains
Bullets... 1 part tin and 60 parts lead
Bullet... 86 grains
The Black powder load is shown using the Lead alloy bullet only.
The equivalent smokeless load is shown available with Lead, Soft Point, or Full Patch bullets.
The WRA catalogs
do NOT show that Winchester ever offered a Hi-Vel loading for the 25-20 Single Shot cartridge.
Velocity of the 25-20 Single Shot Black powder load and the equivalent smokeless load is listed by WRA at 1304 fps (out of a 28" barrel) up to the same 1908 catalog date, but in 1910 through 1918 is shown with a velocity of 1412 fps (out of a 28" barrel).
