This is good...but the total ignoramus who'd merely inherited a SS wouldn't know to search "Schuetzen."

One other thing don't send me an old article from the American Rifleman and ask me to reprint it. There some good ones and I have asked repeatedly to be given permission to reprint it. They either ignore me or denigh the request.

40 Rod  AKA The editor

Not so surprising, sorry to say; 10-12 yrs ago, I requested permission to reprint some of the wonderful Allyn Tedmon material from the '20s & '30s, now totally lost to time unless one happens to own the original mags.  The response--total silence.  I even made a point of identifying myself as a Benefactor Member, but after you've cashed out, nobody cares.

Actually, most gun mags purchase only a one-time publication right, after which the author is free to re-sell the same piece if he can.  However, AR may insist on total copyright ownership; in fact, half or more of AR articles are written by people already on their staff.

But how many current members remember the many excellent pieces which appeared in SSJ during the '80s &' 90s?  Even those who possess those issues probably haven't re-read them since they were originally published.

Why would someone who'd inherited a plain-jane field-grade single shot conduct a search using "Schuetzen" ?

There are three kinds of men: The ones that learn by reading, the few who learn by observation, and the rest who have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves.

They wouldn't.  Probably wouldn't even use "single shot," but rather the name on the gun; but that would result in a haystack of irrelevant websites--mainly guns for sale.  If they kept on searching through several pages of the irrelevant sites, they might come eventually to a helpful needle, like Marlin or Winchester Collectors Assn., but still no ASSRA.

Well, I'll take your word for it.  But I just conducted a little experiment that surprised the hell out of me.  Assuming the persona of someone TOTALLY ignorant about SSs, who'd somehow acquired one, & wanted to find out something about it, I entered "single shot rifle" on Google, expecting to see the ASSRA site or FB page at the top of the list, but it wasn't on the list of 8-10 sites (mostly listings of guns for sale) at all!  Ditto for "single shot rifle history"!  Ditto for "Ballard rifle history"!

Well it was by dumb luck with a little help from Woodford Reserve that I stumbled upon the ASSRA page. This is why we must utilize other means to share our message besides this webpage. A Facebook page, collaboration with organizations such as the NSSF and appearing on manufacturers pages/social media makes us more visible.
Best Regards,

I've had single shot rifles for over forty years now. I've had a computer for around twenty. I only found this site about four years back. Pretty good job of staying hidden, guys. Scott, and others are right about finding other ways to get the word out.

The more often and the more places that you "plant" ASSRA, the more likely it will be that search will "hit" it.

BTW, I got my Journal, yesterday and it took me all of 1/2 hour to read what was interesting. That was only because I read the Auction article and glanced over the match results.

My last issue took me about 2 weeks to even open it to read.

I spent hours looking though most of the 80's and 90's Single Shot News mags.

Let me suggest a re-print of the Staup/Rowe articles (three I believe) on the German rifles, with updates and added input. These rifles need to be promoted, as much as Pope, Peterson or any of the ODG Masters!!!

That sounds reasonable--but still, no visibility on Google (without a longer search than most would undertake), or, I doubt, other search services.

True, BUT if you've heard of ASSRA, you already know what you're looking for!  The trick is to do it with a generic search term like "single shot rifle."

I think--but could be mistaken--that ASSRA once placed a small ad in the Rifleman and/or Shot Gun News. Can't verify that for sure, since I discarded all my Rifleman issues after the mid-'50s (after tearing out articles I wanted to save & still have). Anyway, I learned of it without the internet or anyone telling me about it, because I knew no one at the time who could have told me about it.

ASSRA and many other gun related publications, traded adds.

It's been so long ago, I can't specifically remember how I found ASSRA but, it very well have been Shotgun News. When I was in muzzle loaded, I read that publication, a lot.

Does ASSRA still trade adds? If so, with who and could we increase that?

The ASSRA is currently trading ads with the Single Shot Exchange and Black Powder Cartridge News.

Yep, there are a lot of ways to massage the website for better ranking.
even more generic terms like "old rifle", vintage rifle", antique rifle" , "old gun", "Ballard", other rifle names, etc can be keywords added in HTML to the home page.

Search engines look at every page, so keywords can be hidden, but the Home Page only has "single shot rifle" in text.
Adding these additional words will drastically improve our ranking.
Other sites listing links to our site help a lot also.

It also helps to add some HTML to have Google revisit our site every couple of weeks, as the posts in the forum also will direct some searchers.

Not that hard to come up on the first page of Google, given the number of vintage gun sites.

Seems like that should be easy enough to do by someone who knows how (not me).  "Single shot" is also written as a single word, or a hyphenated word (which seems most grammatically correct to me), so all variations should be included.

Scott has done a good job with Facebook and the only problem with it and way I haven't joined it is it's corrupt as hell and why
Mark Zuckerberg had to sit down in front of a few from Congress. If you don't mind him selling off all of your privacy once you sign on or being so far hard left politicaly sided to the point of limiting free speech to the point of trying to control our elections then I guess you might actually enjoy the site.
