Not until the Winchester 52 with speedlock came along. And the Ballard with Titherington, Hubalek etc barrels held it's own for sometime as well.

I've got a little Ballard #3 that was .22Long and got sent to Stevens when it was very new to be rebored and rifled foor the .25 Stevens Long RF. It's marked under the forearm by Stevens with, "Rebored and Rifled By J. Stevens A&T .25 Cal."
The Ballard is minty, and likely because of the rebore that resulted in it being fired far less.

Harry Pope 530 South Spring Street, Los Angeles, from Shooting and Fishing, November 5th, 1906. This is six months after the San Francisco earthquake and fire.

That's very interesting! I thought Pope lost all his equipment in the earth quake? Wonder how he got back in business so soon after the total loss?

Even back then, one could find just about anything in LA in short order. His lathe may have survived the earthquake and fires. But I too was not aware of his time in LA after the quake.

I'm sure LA had everything, except only one HM Pope, so not sure how he offered rifled barrels unless he hooked up with another barrel maker to use their machinery.

This is just a guess, but it was probably Joe Singer.

I've often wondered how the other well known San Francisco custom gun makers did after the earthquake? People like Bremmer, etc. who also had shops there.

Like a lot of these questions, we may never have all the answers. Such as, did Pope lose all his equipment, some, or simply a safe place to work? Although, in retrospect, moving to LA would not be the best choice to avoid a repeat. Possibly others with more interest  and knowledge of all things Pope do have some of the answers. I thought that I had read much of Pope's long life, but obviously, not all. To be honest I found George Schoyen to be of more interest to me, in part, from having worked in the immediate vicinity of his shop in lower downtown Denver, and a good friend sharing some of his his immense knowledge and collection of all things Schoyen with me. Unfortunately I have misplaced some of that in the, getting denser, fog of time.
