Not until the Winchester 52 with speedlock came along. And the Ballard with Titherington, Hubalek etc barrels held it's own for sometime as well.

I've got a little Ballard #3 that was .22Long and got sent to Stevens when it was very new to be rebored and rifled foor the .25 Stevens Long RF. It's marked under the forearm by Stevens with, "Rebored and Rifled By J. Stevens A&T .25 Cal."
The Ballard is minty, and likely because of the rebore that resulted in it being fired far less.
