This is completely irrelevant, but this is a pic of Andy Zahornacky's rifle that he set an ASSRA record with, and it has a LARGE Bud Welsh barrel.

I exchanged emails with his brother a couple of days ago and he indicated he has a few rifles with these 2-1/2" barrels. About 30 lbs.

I really like heavy barrels, but that's beyond heavy to me!! Bet it would be fun to shoot though!
I won a couple items from that sale, but no guns.

Well maybe. Think more like a banker or bartender or traveler posing in a studio. Or did frontiersmen wear white collars and ties under their buckskins?

The one indian scout has a Richards-Mason Colt conversion in his belt, but the black corporal has a pair of what appear to be Colts revolvers in two holsters. Well armed group, I'd say.
Jose' is right, that fellow up above is the great grand pappy of most of the current 'badass bikers' we see around here in the summer- actually CPAs and attorneys posing as macho outlaws.

Maybe that frontiersman had a white collar and tie in his knap sack just for such goin to town occasions. Big doins goin to town...
Paper mache boulders but I bet that Sharps is real. That is one long barrel on that Sharps.

Regarding Post 577 - That buffalo hunter has been identified as John W. "Texas Jack" Mathias. The photo I saw online lists the provenance as: "Sources of Provenance: Historian William E. Connelly and Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, Canyon, Texas, (Ref#1985-185/2) A similar photo in reverse: "Circa 1877-Possibly taken in Weatherford, Texas"
The W.E. Connelly Card reads:
"Texas Jack" Mathias
Early Photograph of John W. "Texas Jack" Mathias, Buffalo Hunter, Circa 1877, Cabinet Card, 5"x7"
Reverso: Jack Mathias, Buffalo Hunter, Hired at Dodge City. Helped exterminate the buffalo. A successful hunter, killed thousands of buffalo. Finally disappeared in the haze, confusion and indifference of the extreme frontier. Nothing known of him after the buffalo was exterminated on the great plains. See Letter of F.A. Hobble, Dodge City, Kansas, Sep. 17, 1922. William E. Connelly

Eighteen Twenty-Two?
Dodge City was founded in 1872 and Hobble was born in 1869.
Maybe 1922?
Nice work providing the bio for Mathiais. Thanks!

Interesting how many guys named Jack from Texas took on the nickname Texas Jack. There's been a few I've seen written about here or there over the years. I worked with a guy who descended from Texas Jack Omuhondro. Not sure that's the correct spelling of his last name?
