Vacuum packed to insure freshness while being shipped south. It will also prevent them from rattling around and getting beat up by the PO. Obviously, I don't shoot them in the order they were cast. It should keep them from oxidizing from long term storage which hopefully won't be a problem.

One of the custom casters I sometimes use packages his product in that same manner. It has worked as you are expecting.

Regardless of how you package your bullets:

The lead:tin alloy bullets will soften and alloys with antimony will harden over ninety days.

But the vacuum seal may reduce oxidation and reduce hardening of your lubricant.

I keep lubed bullets frozen; so it is like fresh lubed bullets when I take them out of the freezer.

After extensive testing I have determined that tin-lead alloy cast bullets are most accurate when shot within a fortnight of being cast.

I shoot all my bullets after six months when the hardness has stabilized.

There are two ways to get consistent stability: shoot them soon after casting or well after the ninety days at which time they will become completely stable in hardness.

I cast my bullets with 20:1 alloy but after six months they soften and have the equivalent hardness of 25:1 alloys.

Works great for accurate shooting of both smokeless Schuetzen loads (5 shot groups) or BPCR loads (10 shot groups).

Well, Glad to learn I sure do not have any problems with my cast bullets being "too fresh". They get shot up over years and years, just like my mantled bullets. One of the advantages of not casting my own.

If JS thinks the postal service can't damage his vacuum packed bullets he certainly doesn't have much faith in the postal service, they can damage anything,
Mike.

Dave,
First off, I NEVER waste my targets like that, what's the meaning of just using the center!!? second, I feel a little better that using "fresh" bullets - sometimes within six days of casting before a match is considered OK.  I am constantly harassed by fellow shooters telling me I "need" to be casting and letting them set for a minimum of six months and that's the reason I struggle, it has nothing to do with focus, concentration or practice...
and when I do beat the night before schedule - I store them in the freezer also, thought it sounded like a good idea.  All my critical stuff is stored there -  booze, chocolate, tobacco, cash, coffee, etc.  (prevents money from growing mold and lets you know if the kids are drinking the hooch and keeping the same level by adding water)  Grin

I'm for sure not silly enough to think that the postal service can't destroy my bullets. They can destroy a crowbar like it was nothing. I pad my vacuum packed bullets with kapok and just hope they survive the trip. Roll Eyes

PS: I'd be happy to waste a few targets like that!

Im not trying to be contrary but i have shot bullets within the hour of casting and had very good groups .A friend of marlinguy and mine once cast some .22 bullets and shot them within minutes and they shot moa at 100 yards.
Lots of factors we probably will never pin down.
