.40 X 2 1/4 Sharps cartridge

Anybody know what the cartridge for an original Sharps marked as above looks like.  Is it on the .45-70 parent case?  Was it called .40-70 Sharps bottleneck?
Thanks

Yes, the .40-2 1/4" Sharps is also known as the .40-70 Sharps Bottleneck. It's extremely close to the .45-70 base and rim diameter, but of course longer, so .45-70 cases can't be used as donor brass.

Thanks for the prompt reply
So.....what are we going to make them from and how are we going to form them enough to go in the rifle for final fire forming

45-90 Star-Line works but leaves about .150 to trim. I trimmed mine in the lathe. I formed mine in 3 steps with RCBS dies and annealed after forming.

Correction 40-70 necked and 40-90 necked are one pass on the sizing. 32-40 needs 3.

Yes, the .45-90 works, but does take some work, and is not exactly cheap. Unfortunately many of the old guns we love to shoot are not cheap to get up and running. Mostly the case prices, but also dies. But once we get them up and running the cost to keep them shooting isn't too bad.
Still cheaper to form them yourself than pay $5 a case from BACO for formed. Starline sells the .45-90 brass and I see it on GB for about $1. each. Some there now for under $45 for 50 cases.

Baco offers stretched 45-70 cases and they work very well in my Shiloh.

Baco offers stretched 45-70 cases and they work very well in my Shiloh.  I just checked their site and it appears they are no longer offered so reducing the 45-90 is the way to go.  Should give thicker necks that would work better for paper patching should you desire

If you form enough odd-ball cartridges from too short .45-70 cases you might want to invest in one of "Red River Rick's" Kal Max Case Stretchers.  Why pay BACO or anyone else to stretch .45-70 cases to .45-90 length if you can do it yourself?  He offers dies to stretch .30-30 based cases (for .32-40 and .38-55 etc.) and .40 calibre (for lengthening .303 British or .30-40 Krag cases) or to lengthen .45-70 cases.  You just need a suitable sized port-a-power unit and you're off to the races.  Just a suggestion ...

A hydraulic unit to stretch cases is no small purchase for a good one! The use better be pretty significant to offset just buying cases, and be money saving.

I bought a Kal Max unit from Rick about 2 years ago with all three sets of stretching dies.  What the heck, it's only money and I don't spend any of mine on wine, women and song ... well ... other than on my wife!  I spend most of it on guns and reloading equipment.  (Because you can't take it with you when you go ...)

Yes, it's money, but whatever I can save goes towards more guns and shooting supplies. So I don't throw it around unless it makes sense. It makes more sense usually for me to buy an existing .40-90 case and form it down than to buy a stretcher and make cases. Formed down cases also last longer than stretched cases for me.

For what it's worth.  I cobbled togeather a neck sizer from a piece of threaded rod, a Lee quick coupler and a carbide 41 magnum die to neck size my 40-90 SBN. It doesn't work the neck as small as  RCBS 40-70 SBN dies. I use it for all my 40 caliber after they've been fired.

I use my Lyman M dies for all my case neck sizing that needs to be enlarged. The dies I use for reloading usually size necks down too much, so I avoid full length sizing unless I'm doing the first sizing, or forming brass.
