Diving weights

I've never casted, but recently got a lead pot and some molds.
I also inherited some diving weights, can you cast with that stuff and would anyone know if it's an alloy?
Got to be about 70 pounds of the stuff in ingots to ride on a belt.

Aaron they typicaly contain antimony and if that is not an issue for you they should be just fine for you to use.

You should also check with Roto Metals to verify they don't include something else like Zinc and if so you do not want to use them and its better to be safe than sorry.

diving weights can also be cast by anyone who has a mold - therefore made of whatever anyone put into the pot.

That's true CW and a very good point. Aaron can send RotoMetals a small piece and they will do an analysis typically for free and make note all of the elements they contain. Having 70lbs. would be worth the effort all though it might just be better to order the alloy he is really wanting to use and to just sell the scuba weights.

Thanks for the Rotometals tip.
I hate to throw the lead away, it's hard to sell old scuba gear, everyone wants the safety of new stuff, even weights.
I guess I could make a lot of fishing sinkers and get some practice.

melt it all into ONE batch - so you know it's all the same and you know what it is.  22 qt stainless pot (goodwill) works well.

I used a few a while back myself. If it were me, I'd add a little tin and follow Joe's lead*.

Picked up a diving belt years ago. As they hit the garage floor, rang like steel.  Cast .40 bullets for my #4 Ruger. Bullets only went in twenty five ring. Ran out of the alloy. Not shot the rifle since.

This "drop on the floor" test may be a good one. I had some heavier dive weights that hit the floor with a clunk. They cast some good bullets. Some of the lighter weight ones hit the floor with a ring and I didn't use them.

At Springfield one year, put 8 in the 25 ring, relay ended.  People went down to change targets. Bob Z noticed my target and gathered everyone around to look at the target. By the time they all got done admiring it the wind had piped up.  Last two went out. Be careful who you hang with.

Smart thinking, thanks.

Boat keels, too.   Usually the cheapest junk lead they could find.

Yes indeed, get it assayed before you contaminate your pot.

Boat keels are bad news! Lots of zinc in them to avoid corrosion! Had a friend who worked at the local shipyards and he gave me about 500 lbs. of boat keel metal. Had it checked and it had extremely high zinc levels. It made good fishing weights though!
