I know you guys understand how primers work, so you can quickly read through the standard stuff & check out the comments about Federals new Catalyst primer technology the company in converting over to.  I use Federal large pistol primers for BPCR so it caught my interest.

Does less pressure = soft which is good for BP?

I don't know!  Does less pressure mean lower brisance?  The article talks about temperatures being higher, pressures being lower.  Generally the higher the temperature the higher the pressure so it's kind of a conflicting report. We will just have to see if it becomes available to the hand loader.  Me thinks it's all about getting away from the lead. Will it become the norm for indoor shooting ranges?

Lower pressure might mean more accuracy due to less bullet disturbance before ignition of the power.

Yep.   Most likely trying to make virtues out of necessities.

Chris, nice turn of a phrase. I agree.
But, we can hope for a silver lining. Wink

I gathered that they were concocting these to be in harmony with the new powders. Maybe some of those powders are not suitable for our use, nor the primers that will attend. Whatever, we can bet that things will be different. Sure hope Federal continues to market primers that are very, very similar to the ones we all like so much. Not looking forward to this with hope.

One would think they did more than enough R&D and it's now up to us to spend the time to see how they might actually work out either for the better or possibly the worse when all is said and done on our end.

Wayne, First of all - great article and thanks for the post.

Will this new Federal primer using aluminum & the new compounds aid with a lower brisance shooting BPCR reloads?  Good question because many of the current primers use ground aluminum & glass to aid ignition explosions primarily in ball powder.  And these primers have a negative impact lowering brisance with BP reloads.
When the new primers come to market, will be interesting to test them over the chronograph compared to what we have to use now.

"While some shooters like to use compressed powder charges in their reloads—the idea being that with no air space for the powder to slop around in, they will get more consistent results—this can make the primer’s job more difficult, since the pressure wave coming off the primer can compact the powder column even more, making it hard for the slag and flame to penetrate."

Federal apparently earmarks all of their primer production for ammo and handloaders get a tiny bit of excess production.

Federal primers were alost non existent during Clinton's time in office. Then the same thing happened during the 8 years of Obama and now nearly 2 years of Trump.

I have had it with Federal primers. In the future I will be using another brand that is actually available. I do not shoot factory ammo. Federal's technology may be great but if it is not really available then it is not going to be on my shopping list.
